Rock All Our Babies to Sleep
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Show me the lady that never would roam
Away from her fireside at night
And never go roaming out after the boys
But would sit by her fireside so bright
My wife, she is one of a different kind
Often caused me a lot of grief
She's oft' from her home
And she leaves me alone
To rock all our babies to sleep

Just the other night while out for a walk
I happened to stroll down the street
And to my surprise i saw with me eyes
My wife with a man of six feet
She says, "It's no harm don't raise no alarm
Don't make any fuss on the street"
She tickled my chin told me to go in
And rock all our babies to sleep

I remember one night when I came back home
I came in as quiet as a lamb
They must have had comp'ny for
When I walked in
I heard the back door when it slammed
I walked right in and looked all around
I never thought that she would cheat
Without a doubt she had just gone out
And left all our babies asleep

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers's song "Rock All Our Babies to Sleep" tell a story of a man who is frustrated and saddened by his wife's constant desire to leave their home and go out with other men. The song opens with the singer expressing his longing for a woman who would stay by the fireside at night and not venture out after the "boys." He then reveals that his own wife is not like that - she frequently leaves him alone and takes off, leaving him to care for their children and rock them to sleep.

In the second verse, the singer narrates an incident where he sees his wife with another man while out for a walk. She tries to reassure him that there is no cause for alarm, but he is clearly bothered by her behavior. Despite her pleas, he is left with the responsibility to rock their babies to sleep.

The final verse recalls another night when the singer returns home quietly but discovers that his wife has left once again, leaving their sleeping babies behind. The frustration and disappointment in his voice are evident, as he expresses his realization that she has cheated on him.

This song highlights the emotions of betrayal and abandonment experienced by the singer, which are likely relatable to many who have faced similar situations. It paints a picture of a troubled relationship in which one partner cannot resist the urge to roam, leaving the other with the burden of caring for their family.

I am copying a VHS tape to DVD of our local old time country band practicing at my house back in April 1991, My Grandmother asks me if we know this Jimmie Rodgers song, it was her favorite back in her teens (1932), we did not, know that one, but i always remember her asking it, and today I just came across that time, I had not known it was while we were videotaping,.
