Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Soldier soldier will you marry me with your musket fifen drum
Oh how can I marry such a pretty girl as you
When I've got no shoes to put on to put on
Got no shoes to put on

So off to the cobbler she did go
Fast as she could run
And she bought him a pair of the finest there
And the soldier put them on them on
The soldier put them on

Now soldier soldier will you marry me
With your musket fife and drum
Well how can I marry such a pretty girl as you
When I got no socks to put on to put on
Got no socks to put on

So off to the haberdasher she did go
Fast as she could run
And she bought him a pair of the finest there
And the soldier put them on them on
The soldier put them on

Now soldier soldier will you marry me
With your musket fife and drum
How can I marry such a pretty girl as you
When I got no pants to put on to put on
I got no pants to put on

So off to the tailor she did go
Fast as she could run
And she bought him a pair of the finest there
And the soldier put them on them on
The soldier put them on

Now soldier soldier will you marry me
With your musket fife and drum

How can I marry such a pretty girl as you
With a wife and a baby at home

Overall Meaning

The song "Soldier Won't You Marry Me" is a narrative ballad between a young woman and a soldier. The song opens with the young woman proposing to the soldier. She asks him to "marry me with your musket fifen drum," which means that she wants him to be her husband while he still serves in the military. The soldier replies that he can't marry her because he has "got no shoes to put on." The young woman then goes to a cobbler and buys him a pair of shoes, which he puts on. But, when she asks him to marry her again, he says he can't because he has "got no socks to put on." She then goes to a haberdasher and buys him a pair of socks, and he puts them on. But, once again, when she asks him to marry her, he says he can't because he has "got no pants to put on." Finally, the young woman goes to a tailor and buys him a pair of pants, but when she asks him to marry her one last time, he refuses, saying he already has a wife and child at home.

The song is essentially a folktale about how someone may seem like the perfect partner from a distance, but up close, issues and obstacles can arise nonetheless. The young woman in the song starts off optimistic, eager to marry her soldier, but her idealism is tested as she keeps having to fix him up in order to make him marriage-worthy. Ultimately, she discovers that he is already taken.

During the English-lessons on the commercial academy at Innsbruck in the year 1966 our teacher Mr. Karl Judmaier presented us this beautiful song .
