Sweet Mama Hurry Home
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

've been so blue and lonesome too
Ever since you went away
My poor heart yearns for you
Both night and day
Since you're gone the stars
Don't seem to shine
You are always on my mind
I'm so unhappy for I want just you

But there'll come a time
You'll miss me and you'll be blue
There'll come a time
You'll want me no one else will do
(sweet Mamma)
Your heart will long for my loving
Then you'll see that you were wrong
And I know you will sigh
And maybe sometimes cry
But then I'll be long gone (sweet Mamma)
Hurry home or I'll be gone

You won my heart right from the start
I gave all my love to you
I never dreamed that you could be untrue
You have ways of loving all your own
That's what made me leave my happy home
But now you’re gone and I'm left all alone

But there'll come a time
You'll miss me and you'll be blue
There'll come a time
You'll want me no one else will do (oh Baby)
Your heart will long for my loving
Then you'll see that you were wrong
And I know you will sigh
And maybe sometimes cry

But then I'll be long gone (sweet Mamma)
Hurry home or I'll be gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers's song "Sweet Mama Hurry Home" depict a tale of heartbreak and longing for a lost love. The singer conveys their deep sadness and loneliness since their partner left. The song expresses the yearning for their loved one, how their absence leaves a void in their heart, and how their love remains constant even though they are apart. The singer believes that there will come a time when their ex-lover will miss them and realize their mistake, but by then it will be too late as the singer will have moved on.

The song captures the emotions of someone who has been hurt by a betrayal, yet still holds onto the hope that their ex-lover will come to regret their actions. The repetition of the phrase "There'll come a time, you'll miss me and you'll be blue" emphasizes the singer's belief that the tables will turn, and the person who left them will feel the same pain they are experiencing now. The use of the term "Sweet Mama" adds a touch of endearment and familiarity, highlighting the depth of the emotional connection between the singer and their former partner.

Overall, "Sweet Mama Hurry Home" encapsulates the profound feelings of heartache, longing, and hope in the face of lost love, making it a relatable and poignant song for anyone who has experienced a broken relationship.

My father, Duncan, just passed a couple of weeks ago (Sept 23/21). He was in his 99th year so … quite a run. When his cognition was failing, and he really started repeating his stories, he often told us about listening to Jimmie Rodgers way back in the early 30’s. He’d listen carefully to it coming through the walls of his family’s duplex in Cape Breton Nova Scotia where his neighbours spun records on some unseen device.
Anyway, over his final hours I played him some fine JR clips which are thankfully available thanks to posts like this. Dunc was unresponsive at that point but I sure hope it helped in some way while he neared that Supreme Being consult ;-) Hopefully there are will always be a few kitchen musicians out there keeping this music alive.
See you in the stars Dad.
