That
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Up in the mornin' out on the job, work like the devil for my pay
But that lucky old sun has nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day
Fuss with my woman toil for my kids
Sweat 'til I'm wrinkled and gray
While that lucky old sun has nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day
Good Lawd above, can't you know I'm pinin'
Tears all in my eyes
Send down that cloud with a silver linin'
Lift me to paradise
Show me that river

Take me across and wash all my troubles away
Like that lucky old sun, give me nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day

Up in the mornin' out on the job,
Work like the devil for my pay
But that lucky old sun has nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day
Fuss with my woman toil for my kids
Sweat 'til I'm wrinkled and gray
While that lucky old sun has nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day

Good Lawd above, can't you know I'm pinin'
Tears all in my eyes
Send down that cloud with a silver linin'
Lift me to paradise
Show me that river

Take me across and wash all my troubles away

Like that lucky old sun, give me nothin' to do
But roll around heaven all day

Overall Meaning

The song "That Lucky Old Sun" by Jimmie Rodgers is a classic blues song that describes the hard and tireless work of a man and contrasts it with the carefree and relaxing life of the sun in heaven. The lyrics talk about waking up early in the morning and starting work for the day, putting in a lot of effort for a modest pay, while the sun just rolls around in heaven with nothing to worry about. The singer of the song talks about the difficulties of providing for his family and the toll that it takes on him, but also expresses his desire for a heavenly paradise where he can forget all his troubles and just relax like the sun.

The song encompasses the struggles of a working-class man who is trying to make ends meet and provide for his loved ones. The lyrics convey a deep sense of longing for an easier, carefree life and a deep sense of exhaustion from constant labor. It is interesting to note that even though the song was written in 1949, it still resonates with people today and remains a timeless classic that represents the hardworking blues traditions of the era.

I was happy, oh so happy
Down in Mississipi way
I was livin' with my pappy
Fifteen years ago today
When I left him in the gloamin'
I recall I heard him say
You'll be sorry that you roamin'
Fifteen years ago today
I met a slicker from the city
And he led my life astray
How he fooled me was a pity
Fifteen years ago today
He said I could make a fortune
If I did as he would say
But we ended up in prison
Fifteen years ago today
Now I'm sittin' by my own son
For my errors I must pay
I recall I wasn't lonesome
Fifteen years ago today

When you loved performing like Jimmy, you go to the end. He was a brave man and who would know we'd be watching him today on You Tube. The internet is wonderful when used for intertainment like this.

I've always loved Jimmie Rodgers' music. I really like "I've got the old TB Blues" which is my favorite Jimmie Rodgers' song. Just wish they had a cure for TB back in the 1930's and he could have recorded many more songs especially about trains since he referred to himself as the "singing brakeman". RIP my brother.

Old Fogey

Rusty I just found out they didn't have an antibiotic cure for tb until Nov of 1944! My brother and mother got tb before my birth luckily they were both cured without relapse!
