The Land of My Boyhood Dreams
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Alone in a great big city I'm
As lonesome as I can be
Far from the open spaces and the
One that is dear to me
Seems years since I left this prairie
Where the coyotes roam at night

And howl while the stars are blinking
And the moon shines clear and bright
Let me rest down in Texas the
Land of my boyhood dream

I'm getting so old and feeble
My days are nearly done
Oh how I long for the prairie
Where the cattle and mustangs run
Take me out there where the
Cowboys singing the campfires gleam
Let me rest down in Texas the
Land of my boyhood dream

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers's song "The Land of My Boyhood Dreams" depict the deep longing and nostalgia felt by the singer, who finds himself alone in a bustling city, far from the open spaces and beloved person he left behind in the prairies. The sense of isolation and homesickness is palpable as the singer reminisces about the vast and wild landscapes where coyotes roam and sing in the moonlight. The mention of Texas as the land of the singer's boyhood dream suggests that it holds a special place in his heart and symbolizes the freedom and simplicity of his youth.

As the singer's days grow shorter and his strength diminishes, there is an overwhelming desire to return to the prairie, where the sight of cattle grazing and mustangs galloping bring him solace and joy. The reference to cowboys singing by campfires further emphasizes the longing for a familiar and comforting atmosphere. Ultimately, the lyrics express a yearning for an idyllic past, a return to the simplicity and beauty of the singer's childhood and the land that shaped his dreams.

His voice are just so soothing in these hard times... Thank Jimmie...

I'm not even into country music all that much, but even I can recognize the purity and genius of these pioneers like Rodgers, Guthrie, Hank Williams, and others of the same era. Pure America!

Not American but this song is so beautiful and evocative to me.
I can just imagine myself as a boy, wandering corn-fields under the sun. Smelling the heat and the crops, sizing up the country in my mind.

It seems like now a'days all you need is a wide brimmed hat and a fake accent to be a big country-western star. Jimmie didn't need either, and is still the prototype of the genre. Shame that the world lost him at such a young age. Only the good Lord knows what we missed out on.

True he didn’t need it but he still did wear an old lineman suit and train work clothes on stage even though he didn’t work it anymore. He used it to relate to everyone. Now they do it to be “country”
