The Long Hot Summer
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The long hot summer
Seems to know every time you're near.
And the touch of a breeze gently stirs all the trees
And a bird wants to please my ear.

The long hot summer
Seems to know what a flirt you are.
Seems to know your caress isn't mine to posess,
How could someone posess a star?

But you may long for me, long before the Fall.
Long before the winds announce that winter's come to call.
And meanwhile I'll court you, and meanwhile I'll kiss you.
Meanwhile my lonely arms will hold you strong.

And meanwhile,

The long hot summer slowly moves along.
Oh so slowly moves along.

Overall Meaning

In Jimmie Rodgers's song, "The Long Hot Summer," the lyrics are evocative of a bittersweet and nostalgic summer romance that is bound to end before the fall. It seems like the summer season has its way of acknowledging the singer's significant other's presence in its midst. The touch of a breeze is not just any movement of air, but a gentle stirring of trees that makes one feel the presence of nature. The summer accents the significance of being alive and enjoying teh season, and the presence of a loved one makes it all the more beautiful.

The singer seems to be in love with someone unattainable, a flirt who does not belong to him. However, despite that, he is willing to hold on tightly to this love affair until its last dying ember. He recognizes that it is problematic and not for keeps as he states that one cannot possess a star. He admits that his lover may leave before fall, before the winds change, before the winter visits.

In summary, the lyrics of the song are an ode to summertime and the possibility of love during the season. It is a romance that is transient like the nature of summer, and the singer is willing to hold on to his love even though he knows it will not last.

This is a classic that can never be duplicated. These actors were all perfectly cast in the roles. This song goes so perfectly with this movie.

@sudhadent

Watched it many times... Still my go to movie..

@billycharles

The lilting tone of Rodgers and the music makes me feel it’s one of those long, lazy summer days

Jimmy Rodgers had a theatre in Branson for a brief time in the early '90s. I met him after the show and asked him about "The Long Hot Summer". He said it was recorded in New York and that he nailed it in one take. Great song in a great movie!

There is not an actor today that can act as good as Paul Newman could on his worst day. The long Hot Summer and From the Terrace are my two favorite Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward films.

@arthurhogan2133

Right, however, I disagree somewhat; Paul, being Paul in mostly all of his , shall we say, assignments, lol, ( it's the producers you know) we couldn't see the vastness of his range. He didn't get an Oscar until he was an old man. There are many actors today who are just as effective. Take Tom Hardy for example. I just saw him in Venom ' and was thinking, hummm... 'does he remind me of on screen? It was Paul. I'd watched him in that flick with Charlize Theron, ( ' can't think of the title right now, a " Mad Max .. spin off ) this Cat should have been nominated for an award, period!! He's really good. The Marvel comics genre probably would not give him the chance. Why not, though? They award every thing else...Animated etc...want to see Paul's range for sure? Revisit " Some body up there likes me". Perfect example.

@@arthurhogan2133 Tom Hardy? That's funny.
