The Soldiers Sweetheart
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once I had a sweetheart
A sweetheart brave and true
His hair was dark and curly
His loving eyes were blue

He told me that he loved me
And he often proved it so
And he often came to see me
When the evening sun was low

But fate took him away
To this awful German war
And when he came to say goodbye
My heart did overflow

He says, "Goodbye, little darling
To France I must go"

He takes the golden finger ring
And he placed it on my hand
Said, "Remember me, little darling
When I'm in no man's land"

He promised he would write to me
That promise he's kept to
And when I read this letter, friend
I pray the war is through

The second letter I got from him
The war was just ahead
The third one, wrote by his captain
My darling dear was dead

I'll keep all of his letters
I'll keep his gold ring, too

And I'll always live a single life
For the soldier who was so true

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Jimmie Rodgers's song "The Soldier's Sweetheart" tell the poignant story of a woman's love for a soldier who goes off to fight in the German war. In the first verse, the woman describes her sweetheart as brave and true, with dark curly hair and loving blue eyes. Their love is strong, and he often visits her when the evening sun is low.

However, fate takes a cruel turn when he is sent off to the German war. As he says goodbye to her, her heart is overwhelmed with emotion. He tells her that he must go to France and leaves her with a golden finger ring as a symbol of their love, asking her to remember him when he is in "no man's land," a term referring to the dangerous areas between the trenches.

Despite the distance and the dangers of war, he keeps his promise to write to her. The woman eagerly waits for his letters, hoping that they signify the war's end. However, the second letter she receives indicates that the war is imminent, and in the third letter, written by his captain, she learns of his tragic death. Devastated by the news, she collects and treasures all of his letters, as well as the gold ring he had given her.

In the final verse, the woman expresses her enduring love and loyalty to her fallen soldier. She vows to live a single life, cherishing his memory and remaining faithful to him. The lyrics capture the depth of her love and the emotional impact of war, leaving the listener with a sense of the sacrifices made by soldiers and the lasting impact on those they leave behind.

My dad was 16 years younger than Jimmie Rodgers and was likely his #1 fan when he was a teenager. As a teen, he occasionally hopped freight trains during the depression looking for work, and was a small time country musician in north Alabama. He covered Jimmie Rodgers songs all of his life and sounded more like him than Merle Haggard ever did. His yodeling was so close to the real deal. My 50 yr old daughter was very close to her Papaw and is a fan of Jimmie Rodgers, so for her present this past Christmas, I bought a super cool artistic poster of Rodgers with a train in the background and had it professionally framed. She has it prominently displayed.
