The Song From Moulin Rouge
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When ever we kiss,
I worry and wonder.
Your lips may be near,
but where is your heart?

It's always like this,
I worry and wonder.
You're close to me here,
but where is your heart?

It's a sad thing to realize
that you've a heart that never melts.
When we kiss, do you close your eyes,
pretending that I'm someone else?

You must break the spell,
this cloud that I'm under.

So please won't you tell, darling,
where is your heart?

Overall Meaning

The Song From Moulin Rouge is a melancholic song in which the singer is considering the emotional detachment of the person they are kissing. The lyrics communicate the singer's anxiety and doubt about whether their lover is emotionally present during their intimate moments. The opening lines of the song, "Whenever we kiss, I worry and wonder, your lips may be near, but where is your heart?" phrase the singer's fear that their partner may be physically present, but not mentally and emotionally engaged in the moment.

As the song progresses, the singer becomes increasingly dissatisfied with their relationship's state, lamenting that their lover has "a heart that never melts." This line suggests that the partner is unwilling or incapable of opening up emotionally, preventing the singer from fully experiencing love and closeness. The singer even suspects that their partner may be fantasizing about someone else while they are together.

The chorus of the song repeats the lament of the verses, with the singer asking their partner to reveal "where [their] heart" truly lies so that they can be together genuinely. Overall, the song is a poignant exploration of the nature of intimacy, emotions and desire, making it an enduring classic that continues to resonate with listeners:

Wow, I didn't know Jimmie sang this song. He was so versatile and his voice had a wide dynamic range (3 octaves).

Had no idea Jimmie Rodgers ever sang this very special song!

My sister had a beautiful, sultry, alto and sang this at her vocal recital in Oklahoma in the 1950's as a teen. I have never found a good alto who did this song, and this is the closest I have come, though her version was much slower. She was as good as at singing as she was as a police officer in her adult years.
