The World I Used to Know
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some day some old familiar rain will come along and know my name.
And then my shelter will be gone and I'll have to move along.
But 'till I do I'll stay awhile and track the hidden country of your smile.
Some day the man I use to be will come along and call on me.
And then because I'm just a man, you'll find my feet are made of sand.
But 'till that time I'll tell you lies and chart the hidden boundaries of your eyes.

Some day the world I use to know will come along and bid me go.
Then I'll be leaving you behind for love is just a state of mind.
But 'till that day I'll be your man and love away your troubles if I can.
And 'till that day I'll be your man and love away your

sorrows if I can.

The lyrics in Jimmie Rodgers's song The World I Used to Know depict the transitory nature of life and the inevitability of change. The singer anticipates a time when he will have to move on and leave familiar things and people behind, but until then, he intends to cherish the present and savor every moment. He realizes that his time with his lover is limited, and yet he promises to love her and take care of her until the day he has to go.

The lyrics also allude to the fragile and imperfect nature of human beings. The man admits that he is flawed and that his actions are sometimes motivated by self-interest, but his love for his partner guides him to do better. He speaks about immersing himself in the hidden beauty of her smile, the boundaries of her eyes, and her troubles, pledging to be a source of comfort for her until he can no longer be.

Overall, the song captures the human experience of love and loss, and the fragile and fleeting nature of life. It reminds us to cherish every moment and appreciate the people who make our lives meaningful while they are with us.

I've always loved this song. So beautiful! Jimmie Rodgers, R.I.P.

Jim Hilliker

I like all the Jimmie Rodgers songs he recorded. But I think his time was the '50s. His style was different from most mid-60s singers and bands. I can see why it didn't chart very high. Maybe was more popular on Middle of the Road music stations then. He was a very talented singer.

Bernie Milligan

Jimmie had the sweetest dulcet voice of his era.

This a one o them songs that gut slammed me from first time heard and all these year later, it still does.

Les Kruger

I think this was done later by the Kingston Trio. Both good songs!
