Twelve more miles to Tucumcari
I've been hurrying there
To the gal I'm gonna marry
With the yellowest hair

{Left right march along
I've just gotta get home} (just gotta get home)
Ten more miles to Tucumcari
Then I'll never more roam
(Tucumcari, Tucumcari, I just gotta get home)

Eight more miles to Tucumcari
It's the fourth of July
Been three years in January
Since I kissed her goodbye

{Left right march along
I've just gotta get home} (just gotta get home)
Six more miles to Tucumcari
Then I'll never more roam
(Tucumcari, Tucumcari, I just gotta get home)

Four more miles to Tucumcari
Not much further to go
Got no time to waste or tarry
She'll be waitin' I know

{Left right march along
I've just gotta get home} (just gotta get home)
Two more miles to Tucumcari
Then I'll never more roam
(Tucumcari, Tucumcari, I just gotta get home)

Here I am in Tucumcari
Found my yellow-haired gal
Just in time to see her marry
With my very best pal

{Left right march along
Guess I better be gone} (I better be gone)
A thousand miles from Tucumcari
I'll be rambling on
(Tucumcari, Tucumcari, I'll be rambling on)

A hundred miles from Tucumcari
Down in Santa Fe
Fell in love with a girl named Mary
Gee I'm happy today

{No more marching now
Found my honeycomb} (found my honeycomb)
I've forgotten Tucumcari
No more reason to roam
(Tucumcari, Tucumcari)
I've forgotten Tucumcari
No more reason to roooaaaammmmm

Overall Meaning

The song "Tucumcari" by Jimmie Rodgers is a story of a man on a journey to reach his love, who he plans to marry. He is in a hurry to reach Tucumcari, where his bride-to-be with yellow hair awaits him. Throughout the song, he counts down the number of miles left until he reaches his destination - 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and finally 2 miles. He is excited to reunite with his love and to finally settle down with her.

However, the joyous tune suddenly takes a darker turn towards the end of the song. As he arrives in Tucumcari, he realizes that he is too late, and his love has already married his best friend. Heartbroken, he decides to leave Tucumcari behind and continue his journey. He travels a thousand miles away, down to Santa Fe, where he falls in love with a girl named Mary. He forgets all about Tucumcari and his past, and there is no more reason for him to roam.

The song portrays the emotional highs and lows of love, and how it can both fulfill and disappoint one's expectations. The journey to Tucumcari is symbolic of the journey of life, full of excitement and anticipation, but also full of unexpected twists and turns that can lead to heartbreak and disappointment.

I always loved Jimmy Rodgers and a treat to see Jimmy Durante in this video. I am so glad these videos survived to this day and that modern technology can allow us to enjoy them again.

At 1:50,  I love it when Jimmie starts to laugh, Durante is really making him crackup, I don't think he's acting at that point.

I was just a little kid in 1959 -- but I remember some of it, as you say. Imagine our fathers' often unspoken surprise and disgust. They thought they'd gone off to war to get such things out of the way for their own children. How little they imagined what the big shots and whiz kids in D.C. had cooked up for all of us. Even so, while the life we had known seemed to disintegrate beneath our feet -- as long as he could -- Jimmie Rodgers kept hopefully singing on about our common hopes.
