Yodeling Cowboy
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My cowboy life is so happy and free
Out west where the laws don't bother me
I take my troubles like a toy
I'm just a yodeling cowboy

At the set of the sun when my work is done
On my pony I take a ride
Where the coyotes howl and the varmints prowl
With my forty-four by my side
I go down that lonesome trail just galloping long
I love to sing my yodeling cowboy song

Where a man is a man and a friend is a friend
Where all my cares and worries end
I have no troubles nothing but joy
I'm just a yodeling cowboy

At the set of the sun when my work is done
On my pony I take a ride
Where the coyotes howl and the varmints prowl
With my forty-four by my side
I go down that lonesome trail just galloping long
I love to sing my yodeling cowboy song

Overall Meaning

Jimmie Rodgers's "Yodeling Cowboy" celebrates the freedom and excitement of cowboy life out west, where he feels unencumbered by the laws and restrictions of society. He seems to relish the danger and adventure of riding through the wilderness with his trusty gun at his side, encountering coyotes and varmints. His happy-go-lucky attitude is reflected in his music, as he yodels a cowboy song that seems to capture the spirit of the frontier.

The song paints a vivid picture of a world where a man can be a man, and where friends are true and loyal. The singer finds solace in this kind of life, where he has no worries and nothing but joy. He takes his troubles like a toy, and enjoys the sheer thrill of riding on his pony into the sunset, yodeling all the way.

Overall, "Yodeling Cowboy" is a celebration of the American West and its rugged, independent spirit. It portrays a vision of a world where a man can be truly free, unencumbered by the constraints of civilization. The yodeling cowboy is a symbol of this freedom, riding forth into the wide open spaces and unleashing his joyous song for all to hear.

Here in India, one of our best-loved Hindi film singers, Kishore Kumar, had borrowed Jimmie Rodgers' yodelling and it became part of his signature style.

As a child growing up during the 1950/1960s, I practiced Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan call until I was blue in the face. And when I decided to do country music, Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers were my first yodeling influences. Then I started writing my own yodeling songs.

When I was a young adult I worked with my grandparents, this song and others like it were constantly played on the kitchen stereo. It’s such fascinating music. Always got to show this stuff off. Most have never heard of it.
