But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover
Many rivers to cross
And it's only my will that keeps me alive
I've been licked, washed up for yearsAnd I merely survive because of my pride
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's such a drag to be on your own
My woman left me and she didn't say why
Well I guess, I have to try
Many rivers to cross
But just where to begin, I'm playing for time
There are times I find myself
Thinking of committing some dreadful crime
Yes, I've got many rivers to cross
But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover
In Jimmy Cliff's song "Many Rivers to Cross," the singer expresses his inner turmoil as he struggles to navigate through life's challenges. The metaphorical rivers represent obstacles and hardships that he encounters, and no matter how hard he tries, he cannot seem to find a way to overcome them. He is lost and wandering, figuratively journeying along the white cliffs of Dover without a clear sense of direction or purpose. The lyrics are reflective of the human condition, where life is a journey full of ups and downs, twists and turns, and the occasional setback.
The singer's will to survive, although battered and bruised, is what keeps him going. He has been beaten down and written off, but his pride won't allow him to give up. The loneliness he feels after his woman leaves him is palpable, and he finds himself contemplating doing something drastic. However, he knows that he has many rivers to cross, and he must summon the strength to keep moving forward, no matter how bleak the situation appears. The song is a testament to the human spirit, which allows us to persevere in the face of adversity.

Proof that we Jamaicans could've done more than just reggae and dancehall. Very interesting and experimental music have been shot down by producers because of a limited, tunnel vision outlook... I will always rate this artist who could see his vision clearly
