Inka Dinka Doo
Jimmy Durante & Harry James & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a time they sang the
Fo, dee, oh, do
But that was long ago
Then everybody started in to
Boo, boop, ee, doop
They got tired of that, you know

How do you like those guys?
Everybody puts in extra notes
I'll overlook it

But the tune for you and me
Is that swingin' symphony

Ink, a dink a dink, a dink a doo, a dink a dee
Oh, what a tune for croonin'
Ink, a dink a dink, a dink a doo, a dink a dee
It's got the whole world swoonin'

Eskimo belles up in Iceland
Are ringin'
They've made their own paradise land
Singin'

Ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo, a dink a dee
Simply means, ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo

Ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo
Let me hear that choir
Oh, what a tune for croonin'
Colossial
Ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo
Let me hear that band
Stupendious
Now, let me hear the trumpets
That's not a trumpet
That's not a trumpet
That's a trumpet

Ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo, a dink a dee
Simply means, ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo

Ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo, a dink a dee
Oh, what a tune for croonin'
That's enough, fellas, I'll take it alone
A dink a dee, a dink a doo
You know, boys
Last week I sang for the Sultan of Passion
And the sultan offered me his harem of five-hundred beautiful wives
But I turned him down
Because when I get up in the morning
Who wants to find a thousand stockings hanging in the bathroom?
Not Durante

Ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo, a dink a dee
That note was given to me by Bing Crosby

And was he glad to get rid of it
Simply means, ink, a dink a dee, a dink a doo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jimmy Durante's "Inka Dinka Doo" are an ode to the power of music and the joy it brings. The song begins by recalling the days of the "Fo, dee, oh, do," a simpler time where music was straightforward and uncomplicated. But as time went on, people became bored with that style and moved on to the more complex "Boo, boop, ee, doop." However, Durante argues that the true heart of music lies in its ability to make people happy through a "swingin' symphony" like "Ink, a dink a dink, a dink a doo."

I was one of those Boomers born in late 50s. I got introduced to Jimmy Durante too as I grew up. . He gathered fans from every generation. I think he is one of the greatest Entertainers America has ever produced . Definitely an Icon , a Cultural totem .

Durante was awesome! Stars like him and others during that era will never be again. Stars, REAL STARS, had real talent. The quality of the music, movies, and theatre that was was and is beyond what we have now. Now we have trash! Most unfortunate.

One of the greatest of all time. I loved his television show as a child. I remember when it went off the air. The very last show as he walked off into the dark stage lights out and a Good Night Mrs. Calabash where ever you are.
