The band is composed of lead guitarist/lead vocalist Jim Adkins, drummer Zach Lind, rhythm guitarist/vocalist Tom Linton, and bassist Rick Burch. Jimmy Eat World has released ten studio albums, the last nine featuring the current lineup.

The four-piece's commercial breakthrough came with the successful release of several singles from the album Bleed American (2001). Four singles from the album charted within the Top 20 positions of the Alternative Songs chart, with "The Middle" reaching the #1 position. Jimmy Eat World's follow-up album Futures (2004) featured another Alternative number one song, "Pain". The RIAA certified Bleed American platinum and Futures gold, rewarding the two albums for selling over one and a half million records between them. When I was a kid I didn't understand why I related to this song...
Now as an adult with children of my own. It finally makes sense.
My Dad is a higher functioning alcoholic. I repeated the cycle because my husband has addictions too. I pray every day for his conversion and the protection of my children. Jesus is my only Hope!

I always think of the person I'm in love with when i hear this song, he recently started getting involved with drugs and it kills me everyday. I wish there was something i could do to save him, it feels like my heart is being ripped to shreds. Don't say that i deserve better, because when he's the real him....he's more than I could ever ask for and more...he's lost..and I don't know where to go to find him again

I’m honestly so sorry and I get exactly what you’re saying. I’m going through a similar situation myself…it’s like when he’s on the drugs he still makes an effort to remain close to me and remain the same person he always is but he just inevitably changes with the drugs…but when he’s sober he’s exactly what you said…everything k could ever ask for and more. He’s my safe place. I feel the same, I wish I could do something. I’m working on myself and on inspiring him to live a different life…he recently told me he didn’t want to be trapped in that cycle anymore because it was exhausting as hell. He told me he wanted to work, pay his student loan debt, graduate etc. It made me extremely happy. The road to recovery isn’t an easy one but sometimes all we can do is be there for out people and encourage them to seek the help they need. Sending positive energy and hugs your way.

This song makes me think of so many people in my life, especially my ex. I watched him destroy his life with drugs. I stayed with him for so long, and I tried so hard to help him but he didn't want help. Ultimately I had to let him go, because his addiction was ruining my life too.

There are times in a person's life where leaving is for the betterment of both parties. A very close relative of mine has an addiction to fentanyl. Prior this person was under heroin's allure. The father as well to this day suffers too. As a doll plays house, he plays enabler. The family I once knew lit aflame and now resides only the ashes of the love I once felt. Love is pure, yet some allow love to grow into a toxin without realizing. Speaking subjectively, you have decided correctly. I always welcome the particular family mentioned above, but only with a constructive helping hand.

One of my exes in high school was an alcohol and drug addict. At only 16 years old. He would promise me that he was clean and he wasn't drinking or smoking anymore, but his friends would come to me and tell me the truth. We broke up as he went into a treatment program for his addictions. I don't think we ever talked again after that. It's been 5 years since then, and as much as it still hurts and has completely changed me as a person, I truly hope he is doing better. I'm sorry you had to go through a similar situation. I'm proud of us for being strong.

My moms recovering but it still hurts that i never really knew my own parents.. i knew them on drugs.. i never knew what a family was like because they loved their drugs more then me. i live with my grandma. my dads in prison. my moms in a drug recovery house. This song is very close to my heart....My dad has been addicted to heroin and meth before I was even born, and even though I only ever saw him high, at least he loved my brothers and me, and I love him dearly, and that love will never cease no matter how many times he breaks his promise...I will always be there by his side, helping him to finally get off the drugs, no matter if it takes me a million times...I have already made it this far, right?...wish me luck! :)

It will take more than luck, it will take lots of prayer and patience. Ive been clean from heroin for 3 yrs but its still a battle to keep from falling back down the slippery slope of opiates. Dont forget to practice self care and utilize the horrible experience of your father to help you resist EVER going down the same path. Avoid hanging out with those that use. "Laying with dogs will cause you to catch fleas" and "Birds of a feather flock together." I thought I was strong enough to not fall into it but made the mistake of hanging out with people who were doing it and was trying to help them get clean (just like you) but instead of pulling them up, it just pulled ME down. Its hard to help those that don't want the help for themselves...Prayers for you and your family. Stay strong Sis

I Love your honesty... I myself have been an addict for 9 years. I work everyday to better myself & try to better my life... People who judge addicts don't know what they're talking about. Wow... Just re discovered this song 13 years after i made an art piece with the lyrics. I had never done anything, so naive, i was worried about my friend, i never thought i would do anything but i was wrong....to HEAR THIS.. truly HEAR it, to understand it, for the first time since i was a scared confused kid is so emotional.. im 29 and 4 years sober now. i know more people relate this song to weed and such, but to me it applies to my father who is a alcoholic, and he chose the alcohol over us multiple times and even now that we have left him he says hes changed but he still drinks and it makes me sad because i know we can never really move forward until he stops, but the worst part is that i was crying my heart out to him about it all and it was like i was talking to a brick wall. he wont listen to us. i hope all of you will have better luck.

A family member of mine, a sibling, is currently in the grips of an addiction. she lost custody of her kids and since got into trouble with the law. our family tried to force her to get clean and she turned on us and has swore us off as her family. its heartbreaking. addiction is horrible.

I love this song but it also makes me kinda sad because I think about 2 of my friends that started doing harsh drugs (not weed) when we all entered different high schools 4 years ago. One of them just entered rehab for the third time for a meth and cocaine addiction. Ive heard the other shoots heroine every day. I havent seen either of them in years, and I actually do miss them...

I wish I could have made my mom listen to this song, but she probably wouldn't hear it anyways. My mom did various drugs and sold everything in our home and ran away at random points in my childhood. There was a time where we were homeless, too. "Keep me somewhere where the drugs don't go". I wish I was still somewhere kept by my mother. :( I remember coming home from school and seeing that blank look on her face as she sat on the couch. I'm glad I'm an adult now; I can make my own life.

My Mom has been addicted to pain killers for as long as I can remember. All 25 years of my life. I've come home to her passed out on the toilet, collapsed on the kitchen floor, or sleeping for 2-3 days straight. She always tells me she is done, she'll give me the pills, but she always goes back. Witnessing someone you love dearly fall apart right in front of your eyes is agonizing. Drugs don't just ruin the person doing them, it ruins the ones that love THEM most.

This song never really ment that much to until now. Most substances alters your personality in ways you one doesn't imagine. I became less emotional and I didn't fear that much at all, I became a very mean person. It feels weird to know that I am physically and mentally addicted to a substance. no, it doesn't make us better. it does makes us feel better though. it helps us forget about how messed up we are, how broken we are, and how empty we are. i've been on the giving side of hate but was on the receiving side of forgiveness. now i spend my free time hating myself. the difference between me and mike hawk is that i've never walked out on a friend, even after they've walked out on me. mike doesn't know what a real friend is.

I once had a friend who got her self into drugs I haven't seen her in five year's. She started of doing weed but because she wasn't getting the kick out of it she started doing coke on a regular basis and she scammed people into giving her money so she can feed her habit. I hope she has got her self the help she needs. I feel bad for abandoning her as a friend but I had no choice in the matter as she became a very toxic person to be around with, if you are out there (Jen Healey) I hope you have sorted your life out.

Listen to this album in order. The song before this is Pain. If you're commenting on this song without the knowledge that these songs are direct contrasts, you're commenting uninformed. This song to me says that drugs can obviously be hurtful and harmful, but the contrast with the previous song says that it's not all bad. Lots of mixed emotions in this song, and it generates a lot of thoughts about addictions. Also, I don't really consider weed a drug, and it really shouldn't be the focus here.

We all have our own gruesome meetings with drugs and it's powerful grip on our loved ones, and on us as well. I've lost two friends, one due to heavy overdose of methylphenidate and another one was tired of life and couldn't bare it (drug use & depression). Another one, a family member, was heavily intoxicated with different kind of substances and eventually went to heroine. I am addicted to alprazolam due to heavy anxiety, but I've been quitting for 3 months. Slow process to not cause relapse.

drugs or me? i was addicted to smok'ng BAD. we grew up poor yet i managed to find the drugs with ease. it took over my body but deep inside i fought my way out. i have a beautiful son an i don't want him to be left here alone. so i fought the urges everyday. now i'm surfaced once again an i try to get the message thru to the young. we need you all. thank's to Jimmy Eat World for this message.

When I was eight, my mom died in the hospital because of her drug addiction. She was addicted to pills and one day she decided to try and end it. She fell, hit her head. My sister had to give her cpr so that saved her for a while. She was in a coma almost the whole time she was in the hospital. In the end, the most she could do was open and close her eyes. That morning, at the hospital, everything changed. I don't remember much about her apart from when she was high but I wish I did...

People that do drugs ARE NOT bad people. Addiction is a nasty, horrible disease...I don't know a single heroin addict that is happy...don't abandon someone...they need you more than you know....
