The four-piece's commercial breakthrough came with the successful release of several singles from the album Bleed American (2001). Four singles from the album charted within the Top 20 positions of the Alternative Songs chart, with "The Middle" reaching the #1 position. Jimmy Eat World's follow-up album Futures (2004) featured another Alternative number one song, "Pain". The RIAA certified Bleed American platinum and Futures gold, rewarding the two albums for selling over one and a half million records between them. The band's sixth album, Chase This Light (2007), became their highest charting album, peaking at number five on the Billboard 200.

Goodbye Sky Harbor
Jimmy Eat World Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
How could you know just what you did?
So full of faith yet so full of doubt I ask
Time and time again you said don't be afraid
If you believe you can do it
The only voice I want to hear is yours
Again
I shall ask you this once again
He said,
I am but one small instrument
Do you remember that?
So here I am above palm trees so straight and tall
You are smaller, getting smaller
But I still see you
The lyrics to Jimmy Eat World's Goodbye Sky Harbor explore themes of doubt, faith, and the uncertainty of the future. The opening line "Is tomorrow just a day like all the rest" suggests that the singer is questioning the significance of the future and whether it holds any significance beyond the present day. However, the lines "So full of faith yet so full of doubt I ask/Time and time again you said don't be afraid/If you believe you can do it/The only voice I want to hear is yours" indicate that there is hope and trust placed in someone else's words and beliefs, despite personal doubts.
The repetition of the phrases "Again/I shall ask you this once again/And again" emphasizes the singer's persistence in seeking reassurance and guidance from someone they trust. The response from the other person, "I am but one small instrument/Do you remember that?" suggests a humbleness and recognition of personal limitations, but also a belief in the power of something greater.
The final lines of the song feature the singer watching someone they care about getting smaller in the distance, but still visible. This could symbolize the fleeting nature of relationships or the inevitability of change, yet still holding onto the memory of the person.
