rockstar
Jimmy Eat World Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where you're hiding, the shine off the wall.
Stop giving it up now
Cause you're gonna find yourself a mastermind in time.
Rockstar, what's mine is yours.
Rockstar, you're looking good.
You're looking to find a fight.
I'm the stranger here you know.
Can't you understand that things always work out my way today.
Rockstar, what's mine is yours.
Rockstar, you're looking good.
You're looking to find a fight.
Rockstar. Rockstar.
Get off my battlefield.
You could not take it back from me.
It's all the way up top.
Cannot take a longer way.
Get off my battlefield.
Could not take it back from you.
It's all the way up top.
Cannot take a longer way.
That's all.
It's all.

Can't fall away.
Back.

Overall Meaning

The song "Rockstar" by Jimmy Eat World is about the allure and danger of fame and the importance of owning your own identity. The lyrics speak to the idea of people being drawn to the bright lights of fame and wanting to be seen as a rockstar, but also recognizing that there are consequences to chasing that dream. The line "where you're hiding, the shine off the wall" suggests that the glittering faƧade of fame may be hiding something darker or more complicated.

The chorus "rockstar, what's mine is yours, you're looking to find a fight" can be interpreted as the idea of people wanting to be like someone they see as a "rockstar" and wanting to live like them, even if that means struggling and fighting. The lyrics also suggest that the singer is an outsider, with the line "I'm the stranger here you know", emphasizing the idea that not everyone can be a rockstar and that some people are just meant to watch from the sidelines. The repeated phrase "get off my battlefield" could be interpreted as the singer trying to protect their own identity and not let others take it over.

Tom sings great lead on quite a few tracks on this record. Wish we heard more from him. Not that Jim isn't great as well.

He reprised his role as the lead singer on a song off their 2010 album, 'Invented', called 'Action Needs An Audience'. I want to hear Tom sing more live, maybe even release a solo album. šŸ˜šŸ‘

His lyrics seemed a bit cringey in spots back in the early days, but who honestly hasn't been there in their early days as a songwriter? He definitely made some improvements on the new song, but will say, I still am happy with the switch-up and even happier that Tom and Zach are still in the band.

@Christopher Neiweem As much love as I have for Jim, being the voice that got me into them/music, I love Tom's songs just as much; his bangers, like this and Blister, are absolutely bangin' and his slow jams are very passionate. He overall has some of my Top 10 Jimmy songs.

@Blue Pinkman Tom sang on every song off of self-titled, except for 'Usery', and most of the songs off of SP, because he was their original lead singer. The name comes from a story about his brothers. šŸ˜šŸ‘

Tom is good, but Jimmy is 200% better, not just in this band vocally, but across the genre.

Blue Pinkman

Tom sang a lot of their songs on their debut album.

I love how this version of the music video sounds significantly better than the official one, and this version was even posted a year before the "official" one

DrSchadenfreude

As far as I can tell it was their first official music video yeah. I quite like Tom's voice too, although I think he's definitely at his best in the background, peeking over Jim's wall of croon :-)

BongToker420

damn this is a fuckload better than I expected it to be

Love the camera angles. No "cameraman" needed. This is brilliant. Step into the scene. Started listening to Jimmy Eat World in 2017, I have 6 of their album releases, love them all, however after playing the crap out of each (and I still do), Static Prevails is my favorite. I love how vocals are shared between Jim and Tom. Love Tom's vocals here and geez, Jim is a bucking bronco, I love it! JA so passionate in every song he plays and sings.
