Kashmir
Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Whoa let the sun beat down upon my face
Stars to fill my dream
I am a traveller of both time and space
To be where I have been
Sit with elders of a gentle race
This world has seldom seen
Talk of days for which they sit and wait
All will be revealed

Talk an' song from tongues of lilting grace
Sounds caressed my ears
And not a word I heard could I relate
The story was quite clear
Whoah-ohh-oh
Whoah-ohh-oh-oh

Ooh, oh, baby I been blind
No-yeah, ah mama, there ain't no denying
Oh, oooh yes, I've been blind
Ma-ma-ma, ain't no denying, no denying, yeah

Oh! All I see turns to brown
As the sun burns the ground
And my eye fill with sand
As I scan this wasted land
Tryin'a find, tryin'a find
Where I been - ooh-ooh-ooh

Oh pilot of the storm who leaves no trace
Like thoughts inside a dream
You've the map that led me to that place
Yellow desert screen
My Shangri-la beneath the summer moon
I will return again
As the dust that blows high in June
When moving through Kashmir

Oh father of the four winds fill my sails
'Cross the sea of years
With no provision but an open face
Along the straits of fear
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh, whoa-oh, oh, oh

Oh! When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah!
When I see, when I see the way you stay yeah!
Ooh yeah-yeah, ooh yeah-yeah. When I'm down, yes
Ooh yeah-yeah, ooh yeah-yeah. When I'm down, so down
Ooh my baby, ooh my baby let me take you there
Oh, come on, come on, oh let me take you there

Let me take you there
Ooh yeah yeah, ooh yeah yeah ... (fades out)

Overall Meaning

The first several lines of Jimmy Page's song Kashmir describe a journey to a place of enlightenment. The traveler seems to have gone through time and space to reach his destination. He sits with elders of a gentle race, who talk about the days for which they sit and wait. All will be revealed, but the traveler has already seen things that this world has seldom seen. He hears the "talk and song from tongues of lilting grace," but cannot understand what they are saying. Despite this, the story is clear, and the traveler realizes that he has been blind. All he sees now is brown and sand as the sun burns the ground. He is desperately trying to find where he has been.

In the following verses, the traveler credits the "pilot of the storm" with leading him to this place. He refers to it as his "Shangri-la", and vows to return again. The pilot of the storm is described as leaving no trace, like thoughts inside a dream. The traveler asks the "father of the four winds" to fill his sails, as he crosses the sea of years with no provision but an open face. The song ends with an invitation to come along on this journey to this place of enlightenment: "Ooh my baby, ooh my baby let me take you there, Oh, come on, come on, oh let me take you there".

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace
Like sorts inside a dream
Leave the path that led me to that place
Yellow desert stream
My shangri la beneath the summer moon
I will return again
As the dust that floats high in June
We're moving through Kashmir
Oh, father of the four winds fill my sails
Cross the sea of years
With no provision but an open face
Along the straits of fear
Oh, when I want, when I'm on my way, yeah
And my feet wear my fickle way to stay
Ooh, yeah yeah, oh, yeah yeah,
But I'm down oh, yeah yeah, oh, yeah
Yeah, but I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oh, my baby
Let me take you there
Come on, oh let me take you there
Let me take you there

This is not just a song it's a mystical journey into a mythical place in the past present and future.

Another YouTuber called it a rock n roll magic carpet ride. It really is a journey through the Moroccan desert (according to Robert Plant). He said he was inspired by a long road in the desert of Morocco on his trip, a road they drove down which never seemed to end. The beauty and power of this song give me goosebumps.

DG

@A.R. me too. yes, it is a magic carpet ride - So beautiful- ty for sharing his Moroccan desert experience! I love Morocco and plan to go there and a few other places around the middle east, Africa and the Mediterranean : )

@DG you must must stop in Amman, Jordan and visit Petra. It is one of the worlds seven wonders. You can ride through it on horseback. An entire city carved from stone. And maybe you can play this in your headphones there. 😊

I always visualise molten sunsets when I listen to Kashmir. My favourite trip.
