Little Rain
Jimmy Reed Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A little rain fallin', a little clock keep away the time
A little rain fallin', the little clock keep away the time
Well now, a little rain keep a-fallin', on this little love of mine

Little flowers bloomin', the little birds keep a-singin' tune
The little flowers bloomin', little birds keep-a singin' tune
I would like to love ya baby, underneath the shinin' moon

Overall Meaning

These lyrics suggest that the singer is experiencing a moment of calm and beauty in the midst of trying times. The falling rain and ticking clock represent the passage of time and the pressures of daily life, but the little flowers and singing birds provide a peaceful contrast. The singer longs to share this moment with a lover, to bask in the natural beauty of the world together.

There is a sense of simplicity and appreciation for the small things in life throughout the song. The repeated use of the word "little" suggests that it's the small, fleeting moments that are truly worth cherishing. Even though the rain might seem insignificant, it's enough to bring the singer a moment of peace.

The use of nature imagery to convey emotions is common in blues music. In this case, the rain and flowers can be seen as metaphors for the ups and downs of relationships. The rain represents the difficult times, but the flowers symbolize hope and the potential for growth.

HA!

Many of us are grateful to Keith for directing us to Reed in his adventurous autobiography. I would now urge all of you to pick up a copy of Reed's biography too. Just like the lives of other blues greats, it is full of the blues and little anecdotes behind all major hits. For instance, the slightly out of time tapping in this song is actually Jimmy tapping with his feet. The book is entitled "Big Boss Man - The Life & Music of Bluesman Jimmy Reed. Cheers.

Thank you for the tip about his autobiography. Jimmy Reed's Wikipedia page didn't have very much information.

Jimmy is tapping his foot behind time for effect, not out of time. Remember that he also sings, plays guitar and harp on the track, so there is no way he could be out of time.

Haunting music. Everything about it weaves a spell: the sensual lyric, the lilting vocal, the gentle guitar, the piercing harp (another kind of high lonesome?!), the pulse like a loud raindrop. The great Jimmy Reed, such a stylist: how many other artists, blues or otherwise, are so instantly recognizable, within a single measure (4 beats)? Thank you for making this available.

@Nav s Jimmy Reed helped send Keith Richards on his career.

Keith Richards sent me here.

Nice comment, captures the feel of this unusual unique Jimmy Reed cut. And you're right about him being recognizable with a single measure.

Dave Cooper

Pure magic. The Stones also cover it very well on their latest album

Just read a line in Keith Richards' "Life" bio mentioning this song... Richards was a great admirer of Reed's 5 chord, "In a way, we admired him more for that than his playing. It was the attitude. And also the very haunting songs. They might be based on a seemingly simplistic bedrock, but you try "Little Rain." So, I had to know what Richards was talking about and now my brain is exploding!!! Thanks for the upload!!!
