His build earned him a nickname and a signature song, "Mr. Five by Five" ("he's five feet tall and he's five feet wide"). His best known recordings are probably those of "Going to Chicago" with Basie and "Harvard Blues" with the famous saxophone solo by Don Byas. George Frazier, author of "Harvard Blues", called Rushing's distinctive voice, "a magnificent gargle".
He died of leukemia in 1972 in New York City.

Until I first met you, I was lonesome
And when you came in sight, dear, my heart grew light
And this old world seemed new to me
You're really swell, I have to admit you
Deserve expressions that really fit you
And so I've racked my brain, hoping to explain
Bei mir bist du schon, please let me explain
Bei mir bist du schon means you're grand
Bei mir bist du schon, again I'll explain
It means you're the fairest in the land
I could say "Bella, Bella", even say "Wunderbar"
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I've tried to explain, bei mir bist du schon
So kiss me and say you understand
Bei mir bist du schon, you've heard it all before
but let me try to explain
Bei mir bist du schon means that you're grand
Bei mir bist du schon, it's such an old refrain
and yet I should explain
It means I am begging for your hand
I could say "Bella, Bella", even say "Wunderbar"
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I could say "Bella, Bella", even say "Wunderbar"
Each language only helps me tell you how grand you are
I've tried to explain, bei mir bist du schon
So kiss me and say that you will understand
The lyrics of Jimmy Rushing's song "Bei Mir Bist Du Schöen" express the singer's deep affection for a particular girl. Until he met her, he was lonely and felt that there was something missing from his life. But as soon as he saw her, everything changed. Her presence in his life made him feel happy and energized, like the whole world had been transformed before his eyes.
The singer goes on to try and explain just how much this girl means to him. He says that she is "really swell" and that he has "racked his brain" trying to find the right words to describe her. He knows that "Bei Mir Bist Du Schöen" means "you're grand" in English, but he goes on to say that this phrase doesn't really capture the depth of feeling he has for her. He even tries using other languages to express his admiration, but he ultimately realizes that there are no words that can fully encapsulate the emotions he feels.
At the end of the song, the singer urges the girl to kiss him and say that she understands. He is hoping that his message has gotten through to her and that she reciprocates his feelings.
Overall, the lyrics of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schöen" are a testament to the power of love and the way it can transform a person's life. Through the song, Jimmy Rushing is expressing his own romantic feelings, but he is also tapping into a universal human experience known to people throughout the world.
