There's More To Love
Jimmy Somerville Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I would like to shout it from the highest mountain
To tell the world I've found love and what it means to me
But all around there's violence and laws to make me think again
Maybe one day they will understand
There's more to love than boy meets girl
There's more to love than boy meets girl
For love is strange and uncontrolled, it can happen to anyone
There's more to love than boy meets girl

How can one man decide the fate and destiny of innocent lovers
And why is it less of a crime to take the life of another?
Through time they've always tried to hide and cast aside this love denied
In the shadows we held each other tight
There's more to love than boy meets girl
There's more to love than boy meets girl
For love is strange and uncontrolled, it can happen to anyone
There's more to love than boy meets girl

I saw your face, it caught the light, infatuation swirls inside
My every thought for days was only you
So I'll climb that mountain and shout it loud
I'll never let them bring me down
And one day they will have to understand
There's more to love than boy meets girl
There's more to love than boy meets girl
For love is strange and uncontrolled, it can happen to anyone
There's more to love than boy meets girl

There's more to love than boy meets girl
There's more to love than boy meets girl
For love is strange and uncontrolled, it can happen to anyone
There's more to love than boy meets girl

There's more to love than boy meets girl
There's more to love than boy meets girl

For love is strange and uncontrolled, it can happen to anyone
There's more to love than boy meets girl

Overall Meaning

The song "There's More to Love" by Jimmy Somerville is a powerful message about love, acceptance and understanding. The lyrics convey the idea that love is a universal emotion that cannot be contained by societal norms or restrictions. The chorus, "There's more to love than boy meets girl," suggests that the traditional ideas of love and romance are limiting and exclusive. The verse, "How can one man decide the fate and destiny of innocent lovers, and why is it less of a crime to take the life of another?" reflects the idea that love is often punished or discriminated against by society, and that this is unjust.

The lyrics are filled with passion and conviction, and Jimmy Somerville's vocals provide a sense of urgency and authenticity to the message. The song was released in 1990 as a single from his album "Read My Lips" and was a commercial success, reaching number 14 in the UK charts. The song remains popular today as an anthem for the LGBTQ community and for anyone who has experienced discrimination or prejudice based on their love.

30 years later, the song's message still sounds poignant

Stephen Williams

Because it is.

It's lovely to hear this song from the perspective of the world today. Jimmy's music helped so much in the fight to move attitudes on with regard to sexual orientation. Now, if someone else could just do it with race and religion, what a nicer world this would be.
