I'll Fly Away
Jimmy Swaggart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away;
To a land where joy shall never end,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away)

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away; (in the morning)

When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away (I'll fly away).

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the Jimmy Swaggart song 'I'll Fly Away' speak of the eternal hope of the Christian faith, where believers will one day leave this life behind and ascend to heaven to live with God forever. The opening line speaks of a time when this current life is over, which could refer to either death or the second coming of Jesus, when believers will be taken up to heaven. The chorus emphasises this idea of flying away to a higher place, where there is no sorrow or pain. The use of 'Oh Glory' in the chorus suggests that the singer is full of joy and anticipation at the thought of this future journey.

The second verse talks about the 'shadows of this life' disappearing, suggesting that even in the difficult times of this world, there is a brighter future that awaits. The image of a bird flying away from prison bars is a common Christian metaphor for the freedom that comes with faith. The third verse speaks of the hope that this life is just a brief moment in comparison to eternity, and that there is no end to the joy that awaits in the afterlife. The repetition of the chorus throughout the song reinforces the idea of flying away to a better place with God.

In the 1980's I got my first pay cheque and bought all of Jimmy Swaggart's tapes. The message of his songs never changed. The man who sang fell just like any great man of God in the Bible like King David but God forgave and restored him and became the greatest King in Israel.
