All along the watchtower
Jimmy Hendrix Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There must be some kind of way out of here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Businessmen, they drink my wine
Plowmen dig my earth
None will level on the line
Nobody offered his word, hey!

No reason to get excited
The thief, he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke, but, uh
But you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely now
The hour's getting late, hey!

Hey

All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants too
Well, uh, outside in the cold distance
A wild cat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl, hey!

All along the watchtower

Overall Meaning

The song "All along the watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix is a cryptic and elusive song, filled with metaphors and references to Biblical texts. In the first verse, the joker represents the careless and free spirit thinking out loud about the confusion and chaos of the world, hoping for a way out of this confusion. The thief, on the other hand, represents a more practical and pragmatic approach to life. He acknowledges the existence of those who live their lives as if it is a joke but reminds him and the joker that they have seen and experienced enough of life's hardship, so they should not speak falsely now that the hour is drawing near.

The second verse talks about the passing of time and how the world changes over time. The princes kept the view from the watchtower while women came and went, and lowly servants did their work. Meanwhile, outside the walls of the kingdom, an unknown danger lurks as a wild cat growls, and two horsemen are approaching, which probably symbolizes doom and death.

If you're ever feeling down remember we live in an age where this song is accessible in a second, for free, forever.

That type of thing is always a double edged sword though. Yes, on balance I agree it's preferable to live in an age where these sort of things that you love can be enjoyed instantly wherever you are. However, there's something about having to wait for things that enhances your appreciation of them. There's no perfection in life.

@@MARSBELLA1 Considering the government has decided to keep the copyright laws and most labour laws and generally all the other laws exactly the same to avoid confusion, i think you need to take the tin foil hat off.
