E assim crescendo eu fui me criando sozinho
Pois me beijaram a boca e me tornei poeta
The lyrics of João Nogueira's song Espelho tell the story of a man who was born in the suburbs with the support of a happy family. As a young boy, he dreamed of flying and riding a steel bird, and at the end of the day, he would rest dreaming of his future with the most beautiful uniforms in the country. His father played the guitar and was always happy, which made the young man long to play the guitar and write songs like his father. However, the young man's life was soon struck with sorrow when his father died, leaving him alone with his ambitions.
The young man then battles the difficulties of growing up as he struggles to cope with the loss of his father. He tries to fill the void left by his father's death with soccer and becomes a great soccer player. However, he is eventually forced to leave school and work on the street to support himself. Years pass, and he becomes a famous poet, but he is haunted by the fear of failure and his own mortality. He fears that he will be unable to produce the same quality of art as his father and the fear of the unknown leaves him feeling vulnerable. This speaks to the universal fear of not living up to one's potential and the ambiguous nature of personal growth.

Dreaming at the end of the day to relieve exhaustion
Wearing the most beautiful uniforms of my country
O pai de anel no dedo e dedo na viola
My father with a ring on his finger and a finger on the guitar

Smiling and seeming to be truly happy
Eh, vida boa
Oh, good life
Quanto tempo faz
How long has it been
Que felicidade!
What happiness
And how I long to play the guitar like my father did
And to write songs like those my father wrote
On a sad day, I lost my father
E falta lhe confesso que ainda hoje faz
And I confess that I still miss him today
I held my ball and dreamed of becoming a football star one day
A football legend as I grew older
Um dia chutei mal e machuquei o dedo
One day I kicked poorly and hurt my finger
But without my father to comfort me
It was another dream left behind
Eh, vida à toa
Oh, wasted life
Vai no tempo vai
Time goes by
E eu sem ter maldade
And me without any malice
In the innocence of childhood, at such a young age
I blamed God for taking my father from me
E assim crescendo eu fui me criando sozinho
Growing up and raising myself on my own
Aprendendo na rua, na escola e no lar
Learning on the streets, at school, and at home
One day, I became the kingpin of the block
Em toda brincadeira, em briga, em namorar
In every game, fight, and love affair
Until one day, I had to drop out of school
E trabalhar na rua sustentando tudo
And work on the street to support everything
Assim sem perceber eu era adulto já
Without realizing it, I was already an adult
Eh, vida voa
Oh, life flies by
Ai, mas que saudade
Ah, but what nostalgia
But I know that in heaven, my father is proud of me
And proud that his son is just like him
Pois me beijaram a boca e me tornei poeta
For I was kissed on the mouth and became a poet
Mas tão habituado com o adverso
But so accustomed to adversity
I fear that one day, my own words will hurt me
E o meu medo maior é o espelho se quebrar (Bis)
And my greatest fear is that the mirror breaks
