History
The band was formed in the 70s, initially with the name Zoo, but they rose to stardom in 1982 accompanying singer Eduardo Dussek. Good sense of humor was one of the main features, as well as the clothes and topknots of the 50s (inspired by rockabilly and rock and roll stars such as Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry ). In addition to the trio of vocalists on the band's albums: Selvagem Big Abreu (Sérgio Ricardo Abreu), Bob Gallo (Marcelo Ferreira Knudsen) and Avellar Love (Luiz Carlos de Avellar Júnior), the band initially had among its members the singer Leo Jaime.
Some of the band’s most famous songs were “Calúnias (Telma, Eu Não Sou Gay)”, “Lágrimas de Crocodilo”, “Romance em Alto Mar”, “Matinê no Rian” (opening theme of the soap opera “O Sexo dos Anjos”, 1989 -1990) on the main Brazilian TV channel, “Papa Umama”, “S.O.S. Miquinhos” and “Popstar”. The band also created the opening act for the program ‘Milk Shake’, which was presented by Angélica on the extinct TV Manchete. In 1996 the group recorded a version of the Anthem of Clube Atlético Mineiro for a CD released by the magazine Placar. Throughout the 1980s, they formed partnerships with some singers aimed at children, such as Xuxa and Mara Maravilha, and also starred in the youth film “Lua de Cristal” together with Xuxa, Sérgio Mallandro and others.
The musicians were a group of friends from Leblon neighborhood, most living in the same building, forming the band "João Penca e Seus Miquinhos Amestrados" in the early 80's with the most ridiculous name they could think of and within the irreverent spirit that characterizes Brazilians and, in particular, Cariocas (those born in Rio).
Nine members passed through the band: Bob Gallo, Avellar Love, Leo Jaime, Selvagem Big Abreu, Leandro Verdeal (or Leandor), Cláudio Killer (Cláudio Knudsen, Bob Gallo's brother, died in 1983 from gas poisoning in the bathroom), Del Rosa, Guilherme Hully Gully and Mimi Erótico. Léo Jaime soon left to pursue a solo career. At the time he said that the group did not take their career seriously and he wanted to try solo as he needed money.
At the time Eduardo Dussek was in a rock phase with funny themes, so Miquinhos participated in his album “Cantando no Banheiro” (a huge success) and in the following album, “Brega Chique”, which also had the participation of Os Paralamas do Sucesso. In 1983 they released the album "Os Maiores Sucessos de..." (which actually wasn't a collection) and then 5 more albums: "Okay My Gay" (1986), "Além da Alienação" (1988), "Sucesso do Inconsciente" (1989), "Cem Anos de Rock 'n Roll" (1991) and "A Festa dos Micos" (A 1993 compilation, 1st CD by the band) – in addition to several singles. In 2000 they released the compilation "Hot 20".
From the second half of the 90's until the middle of 2007 the band was inactive, the members pursued their personal careers and participated in isolated events. Around 2005, and for a short time, Selvagem Big Abreu and Bob Gallo joined Otávio "Dôdo" Ferreira, Guilherme "Hully-Gully" Belletti and Arturo Marola (a formation almost equal to Miquinhos) to form the group Os Pororocas. Parallel to this, Avellar Love came to form the band Gorillas Selvagens and other sporadic appearances, such as in some events of the “Ploc Party” (events featuring major Brazilian-rock bands from 80s as well as singers). However, in 2007, the group reunited and returned to concerts. An older song “Sol, Som, Surf e Sal” was featured in the soap opera “Três Irmãs” (2008-2009), which had been recorded years before but never released. In December 2008 they played a show at Circo Voador in Rio de Janeiro, recording their 1st DVD, but a few weeks later the band broke up again and the project was shelved.
The latest lineup of Miquinhos, in addition to the famous trio of performers, featured Dôdo Ferreira (bass), Ricardinho Palmeira (aka "Cabelo" - guitar) - these two were musicians in the band at the height of their success - and Sérgio Melo (drums).
