Baby Won't You Please Come Home
Jo Stafford Lyrics

Baby, won't you please come home
'Cause you've left your daddy all alone
I have tried in vain
Never no more to call your name

Since you left, you broke your daddy's heart
That will never make us part
Every hour in the day
You can hear me say
Oh, baby, baby, please come on home
Come on home to your daddy, will you, darling, please

Since you left, you broke your daddy's heart
That will never make us part
Every hour in the day
You can hear me say

Oh, baby, won't you please come home to your loving daddy
Oh, baby won't you please come home

The lyrics of Jo Stafford's song "Baby Won't You Please Come Home" express the pain and desperation of a father whose daughter has left him alone. The lyrics depict the sadness and loss felt by the father after his daughter's departure as he longs for her return. "Baby, won't you please come home" is a plea from the father to his daughter asking her to return to him as he misses her presence in his life. He has tried to reach out to her but all his attempts have been in vain as his daughter has left him and never responded.

The emotions of the father are highlighted in the song. The sense of abandonment and betrayal can be felt in his words, as he tells his daughter, "Since you left, you broke your daddy's heart, that will never make us part". The father's pain is also reflected in the repeated phrase, "Oh, baby, baby, please come on home. Come on home to your daddy, will you, darling, please." Overall, "Baby Won't You Please Come Home" is a poignant and heartfelt song that expresses the loss and longing of a parent who misses their child. It is a reminder of the strong bond between parents and their children and how that bond can be shattered by even the smallest of moments.

Trombonology Erstwhile

The four-song 3/28/46 session from which this gem comes is one of my all-time favorite Stafford recording dates, in which Jo was able to display her jazz proclivities in a sympathetic small-group setting. All of Jo's magic -- the matchless tone, interpretive sensitivity, natural phrasing and technical excellence -- are on glorious display here. Though I love her lush big band recordings, complete with strings and harp, of this period, I can't help wishing that she had been given greater opportunity to record in this type of musical environment.
