Blue Moon
Jo Stafford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue moon you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own
Blue moon, you knew just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for
Someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper "Please adore me"
And when I looked, the moon had turned to gold!
Blue moon!
Now I'm no longer alone

Without a dream in my heart
Without a love of my own

Overall Meaning

In Jo Stafford's song "Blue Moon," the singer is lamenting the absence of a romantic partner in her life. She stands alone under the blue moon with neither a dream in her heart nor a love of her own. The blue moon seems to understand her predicament, and knows exactly why she is there. She is praying for someone to care for, someone to love.

Suddenly, the person she has been seeking appears before her, the only one she will ever hold in her arms. As she embraces this person, someone whispers to her to adore them. As she looks up, the moon has turned to gold, indicating that her prayers have been answered. As a result, she is no longer alone and now has a dream in her heart and a love of her own.

The lyrics of "Blue Moon" convey a sense of loneliness and longing for love, which is a common theme in many love songs. The blue moon is used as a symbol of hope and the possibility of finding love. The idea that a prayer can lead to finding love is also a common theme in romantic songs.

My all time favorite. I was born in 1931 and was able to hear most of her recordings. A fine voice and technique.

Jo had such a lovely purity and richness to her voice that made her unique to other singers...👌

My mother used to sing this when she did work around the house. She told me that one day she was in the kitchen doing dishes and I was in my crib. She said she heard a high, clear voice, pitch perfect, singing every word correctly. It was the first time she had heard me sing and had no idea I knew the words. It has always been a special song to me and is a connection I share with my mom even though she has passed. Love you mom for giving me a love for music.

Of all the singers and songs I love from this era, Jo Stafford was not a name I knew. Literally discovered her here. 30 minutes later I'm still listening to this wonderful vocalist.
