Whispering Hope
Jo Stafford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Soft as the voice of an angel
Breathing a lesson unheard
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word
Wait, till the darkness is over
Wait, till the tempest is done
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow
After the shower is gone
Whispering hope (whispering hope)
Oh, how welcome thy voice

Making my heart (making my heart)
In it

Overall Meaning

s sorrow rejoice

The first line of Jo Stafford's song Whispering Hope describes the voice that is soft and angelic, like the kind that can only come from a divine being. The song then describes the message that this voice carries - hope. This hope is not presented through forceful instruction, but rather through gentle persuasion. The song states that hope whispers a comforting word, meaning that it is there to offer comfort and encouragement to those who need it.

The next lines of the song tell the listener to wait until the darkness is over and the storm has passed. This means that even in the midst of struggle and hardship, hope can offer a way forward. The song then goes on to encourage the listener to hope for a better tomorrow, even after the difficulties they have faced. So, through the lyrics of the song, Jo Stafford is emphasizing the importance of hope in our lives, especially during difficult times.

This is sung so beautifully

This is when you sang into a microphone and that's what came out of the speakers, pure unedited, unaltered voice quality. Today's performers would have never made it in the back door of the studio.

Would you believe ?
" Whispering Hope " is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time in the Philippines and an all-time favorite during the holidays . While the other side of the world is singing " White Christmas " , the Filipinos are singing " Whispering Hope " . Christmas caroling is a part of Christmas traditions in the Philippines and this song is always in the carolers' repertoire .
I could still remember, one deep night in December long , long time ago , my sisters and I were awakened from our light sleep by the sweet voices of a group of carolers singing " Whispering Hope ". It was a soothing experience that uplifted the soul .... the beauty of the song , the angelic voices of the carolers , the stillness of the night , the warm light and colors of the Christmas lights , the sheer joy of it all : it was Christmas time !!!
I have never felt that indescribable feeling again , though I tried to find and feel it again .... even for a fleeting moment .... whenever Christmas time comes around. But it seems that I lost it forever .
I was just a kid then , and I often heard them say , " Only a child's heart can feel the spirit , the joys and the thrills that Christmas brings " .
I do believe .
Merry Christmas !!!
