Even now, hers are widely held as the supreme versions of jazz standards "It Could Happen to You" and "Blue Moon." She sang with male partners on occasion, including Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. She was also considered a pioneer of modern musical parody, having won a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 1961 (with husband Paul Weston) for their album Jonathan and Darlene Edwards in Paris.

My dad had bought a black 1949 Chevrolet and that Sunday we all went for a drive down Prince of Wales Drive in Ottawa. We had a radio in the car and as we approached Fisher Avenue, he turned it on and Jo Stafford was singing You Belong To Me. Joni James actually did it first. Then shortly afterward, Jo Stafford, Patti Page, Ella Fitzgerald and Dean Martin all put out their versions. It's interesting to me that the song was very nearly completely written by a female country songwriter Chilton Price, but she shared songwriting credit with two better known writer-performers, Pee Wee King, and Redd Stewart to help publicize the song. I, too, remember this song as a kid, and I also remember multiple artists recorded most tunes, and this one was the favorite of the public. In record stores and on Billboard they used to list the versions and recording artists in order by sales. Prominent DJ's in large markets were probably paid to have a "favorite." (A hundred bucks bought a lot in 1951.)

Jo's rendering of this song has been in my top ten since I was a kid in the 50's!! No-one sings it like Ms Stafford. I fell in love with her voice when I first heard it circa 1956, but I must confess - I never thought she was overly attractive!! Still, it's the voice that matters. My dad fought in the Pacific during WWII and while back home, my mom stood watch in the towers to watch for enemy aircraft. Back in 1955 or so, both my parents, brother and I went on a picnic somewhere around Hog's Back. My parents were engaged the year this song came out and were married in 1954. This was among their favorite music from the time. I can still remember my mother singing it.

Whenever I hear this song it brings me to a day dream and I am sent back to 1952. I am at the airport in San Francisco dressed in a baggy 50’s suite with a printed ticket in my pocket while I wait to board the silver plane. Outside of the terminal the sky is a technicolor blue and dotted with puffy white clouds. There are rows of Lockheed Constellations, Douglas prop liners and Boeing Stratocruisers parked on the tarmac. Each takeoff and landing brings the majestic sound of propellers and piston driven engines. A sound so seldom heard today. I am about to start a trip around the world on that silver plane. And the best part is that I am taking the trip with someone who looks just like Ava Gardner.

I am 72 years old and this is the music of my mother! Lovely songs with great lyrics.....filled with longing and desire and she was widowed in 1951 when her soldier came home and is buried in Inglewood Cemetary with a bronze headstone reserved for the military personnel. She and my father were military all the way and they both are buried next to each other in that cemetery because they knew the risks of a military career. My father was an officer and much more than a gentleman.

Beautiful song from a wonderful era of music. My aunt, who passed away on May 22, 2020 was 64 yrs old enjoyed music from this era. She was a beautiful woman in her day. Bless the older folks who are 70+ that lived a long happy and healthy life and thank you for giving the world great music from the 1940's- 1950's. Jo Stafford may not be with us but her music will live on forever. And thank all the veterans who served in keeping our country safe.

I am about to turn 74 and was only 7 years old in 1952, but I remember this song very well. We did not have a TV until 1955 and the radio was our center of entertainment. The early 50s had some of the most beautiful music and Jo Stafford was one of many females that I listened to.

I'm only 16, I find this song incredible its warm, sweet. I hope one day i'll be able to look back at my youth and rejoice, if not for my dull experience for the amazing music i've been able to come across throughout the years. See i haven't had much of a life so far, i'm very much a bum in many ways, i've never been one to be invited to parties, never been one to have many loyal friends, as for family? Distant, i was homeless 2 years back hell there's not much for me to look forward to education wise, i'm far behind on my studies for the exams coming in a few weeks that'll dictate whether i go to college and make something of myself or live the rest of my life the bum that i am. soon i'll be out of my moms house, i want to get out of her hair, she doesnt deserve the stress i bring, im a real disappointment and im only now beginning to see that.. we'll see where life takes i guess me but one thing i know that'll forever be with me no matter how hard i hit the ground, no matter how little fight there's left in me, this, the music will keep me going.

I was 6 years old when this record first came out and it was my Mother's favourite tune. It was played all through my childhood. Such a beautiful voice, crystal clear and no over-the-top vibrato or warbling like nearly all of today's "singers" have. And I don't remember Jo having to walk the streets in her underclothes to sell records either!

The first time I heard this song was when I was stationed with the 8th Air Force Band as a pianist at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana in 1986. I grew up in foster homes, never really fit in anywhere, didn't have a girlfriend, and was completely by myself, thousands of miles from my home state. I remembered aching, hearing the lyrics, wishing I had someone who thought of me like that. Many years later, I still wish someone felt this way about me.

You are hearing her voice going from the mic directly to the recording process (possibly direct to disc) without any electronic enhancements. Makes this recording all the more astounding. And good for a young gun like you to appreciate such beauty.
