temptation
Jo Stafford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You came, I was alone
I should have known you were temptation
You smiled, luring me on
My heart was gone, you were temptation
It would be thrilling
If you were willing
If it can never be
Pity me for you are temptation and I am yours

Here is my heart, take it and say
We'll never part
I'm just a slave
Only a slave to you, temptation
You were born to be kissed
I can't resist.

You are temptation and I am yours
Here is my heart, take it and say
We'll never part

I'm just a slave
Only a slave to you, temptation

Overall Meaning

In Jo Stafford's song Temptation, she sings about being lured into temptation by a person that she knew she should stay away from. The lyrics describe how the person came into her life when she was alone, and how his smile was all it took to captivate her heart. Even though she knew it would be dangerous, she couldn't resist the temptation to be with him. In the end, she admits that she is a slave to him and his temptation.

The lyrics of Temptation are captivating because they accurately describe how it feels to be drawn into a bad situation that we know we should avoid. Jo Stafford's vocal performance is powerful and emotional, bringing the lyrics to life and drawing the listener into her story. The way she sings "You smiled, luring me on, my heart was gone" is particularly moving, conveying the helplessness and desperation that come with falling for temptation. The lyrics "Here is my heart, take it and say We'll never part, I'm just a slave" highlight the depth of the singer's feelings and how she is willingly putting herself in harm's way.

Overall, Stafford's Temptation is a powerful song about the dangers of temptation. It reminds us that sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we can't resist the lure of temptation as it draws us in, and we become slaves to it.

Written in 1933 and first made a hit by Bing a few months later, this classic, arguably, could be the most violated song in the history of musical parody. It was composed as a serious confession of hopeless love; but Red gave it the riotous treatment that it possibly deserved, turning it into a totally wonderful fiasco. He was brilliantly assisted by The Natural Seven, and, of course, Jo.
It's possible that The Prof's "year of surprise hit records" was a result of the public relief in the USA that normal times had returned, and a new, better, social world lay ahead. I wouldn't attempt to prove that in a historical journal, but I do remember the adult optimism of 1947.

When I was eight or nine my family moved to Chester Illinois ... Because my dad how to change of occupation...and in the old house that we were renting at the time in the basement of the old house I found a stack of Wax records from the 1940s and this was amongst them temptation also peg o my heart, give me your love for Christmas, and many many others they were very thick and heavy records and we're just going to be played at 78 RPM as a little boy I consider this a treasure trove and I enjoy listening to them for hours and I still recall many of the songs to this day many years later
