Growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas the two ran with similar circles, going to the same church and attending the same college before their paths crossed and they hit it off. Thomas was formerly in the band Canopy Climbers and Rutherford in Brothers + Company before they met. After Rutherford graduated college he decided to pursue music as a career, Thomas was already on that path and they began to pursue a music licensing project. The first time they wrote together they penned “Take Me On” and decided to shift their focus. Over the next few weeks, they began to write and record songs and came up with a song called “With Somebody Else” that they released softly through some music blogs. They then released their debut single “Take Me On” through the label 20XX in 2017. Joan followed up this release with several other one-off singles, before releasing the EP portra on, July 11, 2018. The band is set to tour in the fall of 2018.

Overall Meaning

In Joan's song "Drive All Night," the singer contemplates his relationship with an unnamed person. He has come to the realization that being friends with serenity is better than spending energy on hope and faith in someone who might not reciprocate those feelings. He hopes that the impatience and fear that he has felt in the past will not return, leading him to become hopeful again. The singer pleads with this person to forget about him when it comes to their dreams and not to show up and give him hope. He wants to avoid falling for this person again and to keep his rationality intact.

The lyrics of "Drive All Night" speak to the desire to have control over one's emotions and to avoid getting caught up in romantic hopes that may never come to fruition.
