Armatrading has mixed eclectic musical styles over decades of recording and performing. She has had several British hit singles, the biggest of which were "Love & Affection", "Me Myself I", and "Drop the Pilot". Her music is generally pop, with forays into rock, folk, jazz, and even reggae. Her popularity is primarily as an album artist.
She gained a new audience following her writing and performing "The Flight of the Wild Geese", which was used during the opening and end titles for the 1978 film The Wild Geese.
Armatrading first performed in a concert at Birmingham University for her brother at the age of about 16 (circa 1966). She only knew her own songs, but her brother asked her to perform something that would be familiar to the audience; she chose "The Sound of Silence".[9] She then performed her own songs around the local area with a friend from school, and played bass and rhythm guitar at local clubs.
All A Woman Needs

And he phones her every night
Because she's his fancy
She's bound to love him too
And he's proved his feelings
He gives her all she needs
This boy can't understand
He won't whisper words of love
He thinks it's alright, love can come later
But woman, love is all she needs
He will never get his way with ease
He has to woo her properly
Or he'll never win her heart
Man likes to own
A woman shares
Man has his needs
A woman cares
Never means to make her cry
Oh, he wants this girl so bad
The boy can't understand
He thinks it's alright, love can come later
But woman, love is all she needs
He will never get his way with ease
He has to woo her properly
Or he'll never win her heart
In Joan Armatrading's song, "All A Woman Needs," the lyrics highlight the expectations that women have in a relationship. The song begins by describing a man who brings his woman flowers every day and calls her every night, believing that he has shown her enough love. However, the woman needs more than just material items and gestures; she needs love and affection from her partner, which the man fails to comprehend. The boy has her in his arms, but he fails to express his love in words, believing that it is enough to show it through actions.
The song emphasizes that love is all a woman needs and that it cannot come later. The boy cannot get his way with ease, and he must woo her properly to win her heart. The lyrics suggest that men often like to own women, but a woman's love and care cannot be bought or taken. The boy wants the girl so bad, but he fails to understand that he cannot win her over with just material possessions and actions; he must show love in words and actions to win her heart.
Overall, "All A Woman Needs" by Joan Armatrading sheds light on the expectations of women in a relationship and the importance of love and affection. The song highlights that gestures and material things cannot replace the need for love and care in a relationship.

She's just fantastic, were lucky to have somebody as superb- I just run out of words trying miserably to express just what she means to the whole human race- she makes us FEEL the emotions of life. A bit like Shakespeare, only more concise.
