Armatrading has mixed eclectic musical styles over decades of recording and performing. She has had several British hit singles, the biggest of which were "Love & Affection", "Me Myself I", and "Drop the Pilot". Her music is generally pop, with forays into rock, folk, jazz, and even reggae. Her popularity is primarily as an album artist.
She gained a new audience following her writing and performing "The Flight of the Wild Geese", which was used during the opening and end titles for the 1978 film The Wild Geese.
Armatrading first performed in a concert at Birmingham University for her brother at the age of about 16 (circa 1966). She only knew her own songs, but her brother asked her to perform something that would be familiar to the audience; she chose "The Sound of Silence".[9] She then performed her own songs around the local area with a friend from school, and played bass and rhythm guitar at local clubs.

You say white
You do anything to be the one that's right
Go to extremes
Got to win
Still you're not happy
Just see the state you're in
Tell me what is driving you crazy
You're feeling something's wrong and you blame me
Well I just wanna say
It's your stupid mistake
I don't regret the time that we shared
But I do resent the martyr you play though
I'm the one who suffers more than my share of
All the hurt in this game
This mixed up game
Now you made your bed you can lie on it baby
I won't be there next to you
All of the great little pleasures that you bring
Get canceled out by the weird things you do
Not Lucifer
Not the Trinity
No one on earth can make you feel at ease
It serves me right
Cos I left you once
I broke my own rule
Because I wanted to please
But you're never satisfied are you baby
Tell me what is driving you crazy
You're feeling something strong and you blame me
Well I just wanna say
It's your stupid mistake
Now you made your bed you can lie on it baby
I won't be there next to you
All of the great little pleasures that you bring
Get canceled out by the weird things you do
You made your bed you can lie on it baby
I won't be there next to you
All of the great little pleasures that you bring
Get canceled out by the weird things you do
Get canceled out by the weird things
I say black
You say white
You do anything to be the one that's right
But you're never satisfied
I said you're never satisfied
Something is always driving you crazy
Something is driving you crazy
You made your bed you can lie on it
You made your bed you can lie on it
You made your bed you can lie on it baby
I won't be there next to you
You made your bed you can lie on it baby
I won't be there next to you
All of the great little pleasures that you bring
Get canceled out by the weird things you do
You made your bed you can lie on it baby
I won't be there next to you
All of the great little pleasures that you bring
Get canceled out by the weird things you do
Joan Armatrading's "You Made Your Bed" is a song that delves into the intricacies of relationships and the complexities of human behavior. The lyrics speak to the notion that even in the face of love, conflicts can arise between two people. The song tells the story of one person who is eager to be right in every situation, desperate to go to extreme measures just to prove their point. The other person can see that this behavior is not making them happy, and tries to address it. However, the person who is causing the problems refuses to take responsibility, instead blaming their partner.
The phrase "You made your bed and now you can lie in it" has a negative connotation, and serves as a warning that the consequences of one's actions will come back to haunt them. In this context, it seems like the person who is causing problems in the relationship is being told that they must deal with the repercussions of their actions. Additionally, the line "All of the great little pleasures that you bring get canceled out by the weird things you do" highlights the idea that actions have consequences, and that even the good things in a relationship can be overshadowed by negative behaviors. Overall, the song is a heartbreaking depiction of two people who are at a crossroads in their relationship, and how one person's behavior has led to the breakdown of what was once a beautiful connection.
