Annabel Lee
Joan Baez Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee,
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love,
I and my Annabel Lee,
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud,chilling
My Annabel lee,
So that her high, born kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulcher
In this kingdom by the sea.

And the angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me,
Yes!,that was the reason(as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling my Annabel lee,
That the wind came out of the cloud by night
Killing my Annabelle.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we,
Of many far wiser than we,
And neither the angels in heaven above
Nor the the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee, and the moon never beams,
Without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee,
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee,
And so,all the night, tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling my life and my bride,

In the sepulcher there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

Overall Meaning

Joan Baez's song "Annabel Lee" is a beautiful poetic narrative of a love that transcends time, death, and even the supernatural forces both above and below the sea. The singer (presumably a man) reflects upon his love for Annabel Lee, a beautiful maiden with whom he shared a deep and passionate love. As a child in a kingdom by the sea, they loved each other with a love that the angels in heaven coveted. However, their love was cut short when Annabel Lee was taken from him by her high-born kinsmen and placed in a sepulcher by the sea.

Despite her death, the singer's love for Annabel Lee is unwavering and unwaveringly strong. He believes that their love is stronger than that of those who are much older and wiser, and that their souls are forever intertwined. The singer is haunted by dreams of Annabel Lee and feels her presence when he looks at the stars. He lies down next to her in her tomb by the sea, and he is at peace knowing that they will forever be together.

The lyrics to "Annabel Lee" showcase the power of love in the face of tragedy and loss, and its ability to transcend even the most significant obstacles such as death.

"We loved with a love that was more than love"—Mr. Poe, you may be remembered today mostly for your horror stories, but goodness, you could describe romance like no one else. Bravo, sir, and brava to Ms. Baez for this beautiful rendition. :)

Oh my God! Of all people, Edgar Allan Poe interpreted by Joan Baez! What a combination, perfect!! Joan Baez refreshes centuries old dried blood so vividly! It makes you go back to those times and sense what those feelings must've felt!

Catlover tea4

Perfection. Arrangement with voice with words with melody - too moving for words. No other combination could come close to working as well as this - nothing. Music has been in my heart since I can remember, so I'll just speak for myself.

I love Joan baez

Gotta say, I greatly prefer the chords and arrangement here by Erik Quisling. Didn't care for stevie nicks interpretation either.

The words come not from Joan Baez, but from Edgar Allen Poe... one of my all-time favorite poems by Poe.

Arja Tappola

Joan, the one of the greatest singers in our time!

Richard Thomas

This poem frightened me as a child. I didn't know that Joan Baez had sung it until relatively recently. She also sang e. e. Cummings' All In Green Went My Love Riding -- equally effectively.

Hans Fried

Wow! a great poem, song with superb arrangement.

Dash Sitar

Her voice is healing me somehow
