In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.

Brand New Tennessee Waltz
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You favor a girl that I knew,
I imagine that she´s still in Tennessee,
And, by God, I should be there, too
I´ve a sadness too sad to be true.
But I left Tennessee in a hurry, Dear,
The same way that I´m leaving you,
´Cause love is mainly just memories
So when I´m gone I´ll be glad to love you.
[Chorus]
At the brand new Tennessee Waltz you´re lit ´rally waltzing on air;
At the brand new Tennessee Waltz there ain´t no telling who will be there.
When I leave it´ll be like I found you, Love,
Descending Victorian stairs,
I´m feeling like one of your photographs
I´m trapped while I´m putting on airs,
And getting even by asking, "Who cares".
So, have all of your passionate violins
Play a tune for a Tennessee kid,
Who´s feeling like leaving another town
With no place to go if he did,
´Cause they´ll catch you wherever you hid.
The song "Brand New Tennessee Waltz" by Joan Baez is a poignant reflection on love, loss, and memories. The opening lyrics, "Oh, my, but you have a pretty face, / You favor a girl that I knew," set the nostalgic and bittersweet tone of the song. The singer is reminded of a past love when he sees a woman who looks like her, and is filled with sadness for what he has lost. He acknowledges that love is mostly just memories, and that everyone has their own set of memories to cherish. Despite his sadness, however, he still feels glad to love the woman he is leaving behind, knowing that their love will live on in his memories.
The chorus of the song, with its lilting melody and upbeat tempo, provides a contrast to the melancholy verses. It describes the "brand new Tennessee Waltz," a dance where people are "lit'rally waltzing on air," and where anything can happen. The dance represents the idea that life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and that we never know what might happen next.
Overall, "Brand New Tennessee Waltz" is a deeply introspective and beautifully written song that captures the complex emotions of love and loss. It speaks to anyone who has ever loved and lost, and reminds us that even though love may be fleeting, the memories we make remain with us forever.
