In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Caruso
Joan Baez Lyrics

Infinity gives me chills
So could the waters of Iceland
But there's a difference in finding diamonds in rust
And rhinestones in a dishpan
Miracles bowl me over
And often will they do so
The voice of the great Caruso
Bring infinity home
Let me embrace it one more time
Make it the lilies of the field
Or Caruso in his prime
A friend of mine gave me a tape
She'd copied from a record disc
It was made at the turn of the century
And found in a jacket labeled "misc."
And midst cellos, harps, and flugelhorns
With the precision of a hummingbird's heart
Was the lord of the monarch butterflies
One-time ruler of the world of art
Bring infinity home
Let me embrace it one more time
Make it the lilies of the field
Or Caruso in his prime
Yes, the king of them all was Enrico
Whose singular chest could rival
A hundred fervent Baptists
Giving forth in a tent revival
True he was a vocal miracle
But that's only secondary
It's the sould of the monarch butterfly
That I find a little bit scary
Bring infinity home
Let me embrace it one more time
Make it the lilies of the field
Or Caruso in his prime
Perhaps he's just a vehicle
To bear us to the hills of Truth
That's Truth spelled with a great big T
And peddled in the mystic's booth
There are oh so many miracles
That the western sky exposes
Why go looking for lilacs
When you're lying in a bed of roses?
Bring infinity home
Let me embrace it one more time
Make it the lilies of the field
Or Caruso in his prime

The lyrics to Joan Baez's song Caruso embody a sense of wonder and awe towards the infinite and the miracles that exist within our world. The opening lines juxtapose the icy waters of Iceland with the concept of infinity, highlighting the chills that can be induced by both. Baez then draws a contrast between real diamonds found in rust and mere rhinestones in a dishpan, ultimately asserting her preference for miracles that truly bowl her over.
Baez then recounts how she was introduced to a recording of Enrico Caruso, the "lord of the monarch butterflies" and "one-time ruler of the world of art." Despite his impressive vocal feats, Baez seems to find more intrigue in the soul of the monarch butterfly, and suggests that Caruso may serve as a vehicle to lead us to the hills of Truth, spelled with a capital T. Baez ends the song with a question - why search for lilacs when one is already lying in a bed of roses? - and a plea to bring infinity home and embrace it once more.
Overall, the song seems to be an ode to the beauty and wonder that can be found in the natural world, and a call to appreciate the miracles that surround us rather than endlessly seeking something more.
