In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Dear Landlord
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My burden is heavy, dear
And my dreams are beyond my control
Oh yes, they are
But when that steamboat whistle blows
Oh, honey I'm gonna give you everything I ever had to give, yeah
And I do hope that you can receive it well
Whoa, landlord, please heed these words that I try to speak
I know you must have suffered much
But honey you ain't alone, you ain't so unique
No no no, no no
All of us at times, I said, we might have worked too hard
Or too heavy, too fast and way too rushed, yeah
But everyone can fill their life with anything
You can look around, but baby, you just cannot touch
Whoa, my dear landlord, please don't you dismiss my case
I'm not about to argue with you
And honey I'll tell ya, I'm ain't gonna move to no other place
'Cause I just ain't gonna do it, no no no
Each of us must have our own special gift
Oh honey, don't you know that it's got to be true
And if you don't underestimate me, I'll tell you one thing
I said that I won't underestimate you, no
In Joan Baez's song "Dear Landlord," the singer is addressing her landlord and pleading with them not to put a price on her soul. She expresses that her burden is heavy, and her dreams are beyond her control. However, she promises to give everything she has when the steamboat whistle blows. She hopes that her landlord will receive it well, knowing that it depends on the way they live and feel.
The lyrics are a poignant reflection of the human condition and the struggle to maintain one's integrity and dignity in the face of hardship. The singer acknowledges that the landlord must have suffered much, but reminds him that he is not alone, and everyone works too hard at times. She asserts that each person has their own special gift in life, and if the landlord does not underestimate her, she will not underestimate him.
Overall, "Dear Landlord" is a powerful message of empathy and hope, expressing a desire for understanding and mutual respect between people from different walks of life.
