In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.

Glad Bluebird Of Hapiness
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A heavy pack upon my back, worldly goods within a sack of lonliness
When fluttered by this bird of blue, he said I´ll tell you what I ´ll do
Since you seem to be so sad, I will try and be your glad..bluebird of happiness
And he goes flying, far over the ocean blue,
found the places, I am not known to.
blown foggy by the wind paced, passing shore to shore we race,
moved from place to place
The moon is hot, the stars are cold. I´ve been there, that's how I know
I´ve touched the desert sunsets cold
placed it of the melted snows of Kilimanjaro
And he goes flying, far over the ocean blue,
found the places, I am not known to.
I´ll follow that bird until he dies and when he does then so will I,
I know I ´ll never be the same, LiFe to me is bound to change
when there fans(?) to chase
I lift his body from the sea, let him dry the trade wind breeze
find some merry christmas news, grabbed them up and giving to you
my bluebird of happiness
And he goes flying, far over the ocean blue,
found the places, I am not known to.
The song "Glad Bluebird of Happiness" is a beautiful ballad by Joan Baez about finding hope in the depths of despair. The song tells the story of a lonely traveler, burdened by the weight of life's troubles, who is visited by a bluebird of happiness. The bluebird offers to be his guide, taking him on a journey far beyond his wildest dreams. Together they journey over the ocean blue, through unfamiliar landscapes, and finally returning home with a new sense of joy and purpose.
The bluebird in this song is a symbol of hope and renewal. The bird's arrival brings a glimmer of light into the traveler's dark world, inspiring him to follow it wherever it goes. The journey is a metaphor for the emotional and spiritual transformation that comes with finding hope in difficult circumstances. The traveler returns home a changed person, with a newfound sense of optimism and purpose.
Overall, "Glad Bluebird of Happiness" is a powerful testament to the healing power of hope and the resilience of the human spirit. It's a song that reminds us that even in our darkest moments, there is always a reason to believe that things will get better.
