In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Jesse
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's a hole in the bed
Where we slept
Now it's growing cold
Hey jesse, your face
In the place where we lay
By the hearth, all apart
It hangs on my heart
No I'm not scared - I wait for you
Hey jesse, I'm lonely, come home
Jesse, the floors and the boards
Recalling your step
And I remember, too
All the pictures are fading
And shaded in grey
But I still set a place
On the table at noon
And I'm leaving a light on the stairs
No I'm not scared - I wait for you
Hey jesse, I'm lonely, come home
Jesse, the spread on the bed
Is like when you left
I've kept it all for you
And all the blues and the greens
Have been recently cleaned
And they're seemingly new
Hey jes, me and you
We'll swallow the light on the stairs
We'll do up my hair
We'll sleep unaware
Hey jesse, I'm lonely, come home
The song “Jesse” by Joan Baez is a hauntingly beautiful ballad dedicated to a lost love. The song is a plea to a man named Jesse to come back home. The singer tells Jesse that she is waiting for him and keeping a light on the stairs for him. The lyrics are full of imagery that provides deep insight into the singer’s feelings of loneliness and heartbreak.
The opening verses of the song describe a home that was once shared by the singer and Jesse, but now Jesse is gone. The singer reminisces about their time together, reflecting on the warmth of Jesse’s face, the sound of his step, and the faded pictures that hang on the wall. The singer describes a hole in the bed where they used to sleep together, now growing cold. Despite the emptiness and loneliness of the home, the singer continues to keep the light on the stairs, waiting for Jesse’s return.
The final verse of the song suggests that the singer and Jesse will eventually be reunited. They will swallow the light on the stairs and go to sleep unaware. The haunting melody and powerful lyrics of “Jesse” bring to life the pain of waiting for someone to return home.
