Baez rose to prominence in the early '60s with her stunning renditions of traditional balladry.
In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.

500 years and this song still stands fully strong. In our age of anger and hopelessness, there isn't a voice out there with the compassion found in her's. Our music wove us together in those days. It gave us hope when we might be sent off to VietNam or die in a nuclear inferno. Now this kind of ...love... seems the height of absurdity. It's out of fashion... yet it is exactly what we need.
Stalking Like Candy
My mother used to play me Joan Baez when I was a boy. And now I just sung my daughter off to sleep with this song.

We must not let our pain become cruelty.

The first time I heard Joan, I was stunned. I had tears in my eyes. The same thing happened again at Woodstock, but it was raining, so nobody noticed. Boys did not cry in those days we were told. They were just sent to war unless they got lucky with a high lottery number, like me. She was good for our souls. Made us into good pirates.
Joan's small figure was visible on the lighted stage as we sat in the darkness, 500,000 silent.

Beautiful to read, thanks for sharing! I was born in 1980 and come to realize that later generations don't seem to understand the real impact of what happened during the 60s. On one side, the 60s are romanticized as some great times, which they were not. People were just starting to break free but so much ballast was still left! Or it is said that no change results from the 60s, and that is not true either. So many of the freedoms of my generation and that of my children are a result of what young people then were fighting for. I hope it does not all get lost during the next decades. We live in very confusing times.

Soy argentino y siento sana envidia de no haber podido estar ahi y escuchar a Joan.
The Folk Revival Project
Have you heard any traditional versions of this song? Joan Baez's version is a cover of a recording by the traditional Welsh singer Phil Tanner (1862-1950). I included his recording in my latest "Phonograph to Folk Revival" series on my channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ImQzZjI1L8&list=PLwWhhTorQQMEKbuVuYxwfVUo9DCpc1yHa&index=3
Several other Joan Baez songs are featured.

The first time I heard Joan Baez was at a folk song festival in Illinois. Was visiting a friend.
I was blown away by her voice and the songs. No voice like hers, she moved your soul. Started my interest in traditional folk singing
