In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
King's Highway

Sometimes you can never tell
Where a story will unwind
How deep is the shallow ground
Sometimes you would never guess
Who's all talk and who just might
Find a way or lose themselves
I am just like many more
Who lie in bed, still and numb
Waking up and I can see
Just how dark it has become
Who knows no better angels now
Who knows none but earthly light
Who is waiting for a stranger
On the king's highway tonight
It wasn't how I had it planned
When it finally came around
I took a man with my own hands
But I held him close when he went down
He hadn't time to be afraid
His look was only of surprise
Staring up from where he lay
On the king's highway tonight
I took the little that he had
Only as an afterthought
He wouldn't have to feel so bad
To think I killed him just because
He was passing through this town
Only 'cause he looked about right
He stopped when I flagged him down
On the king's highway tonight
I might just change my mind
Sometimes you can never tell
The lyrics of Joan Baez's song, King's Highway, are introspective and thought-provoking. The opening lines show a level of uncertainty and hesitation by the singer. The lyrics express an idea that one can never truly be certain of what is to come or where life's journey will lead, which can lead to questioning one's decisions and outlooks. The lyrics explore the concept of self-doubt and the complex nature of human behavior. The line "how deep is the shallow ground" suggests that even simple decisions can have profound impacts.
The song also paints a picture of the unknown dangers and potential traps that one may face in life. It speaks of people who may put on a façade, leading others to believe they are one way, when they are actually another. The singer contrasts this with those who may struggle but find their way in life. The reference to the "king's highway" suggests that life is a journey along a path that is beyond our control. The singer acknowledges their own imperfections and acknowledges that they are not alone in their struggles. The song's themes are complex, with the singer expressing remorse for taking someone's life, but then rationalizing their actions.
Overall, King's Highway is a complex song with complex themes. It explores the uncertainty and the complexity of human nature, as well as the beauty and danger of life's journey.
