In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Last Lonely and Wretched
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You long to be free,
But in this Godforsaken land
You find no home, no family
On the many roads that you've wandered
Since the day of your birth.
You've become one of the last,
Your hair is matted,
Your face and hands are dirty,
And the years that you've toiled
Must number somewhere near thirty.
The deepening of a sadness
Broke finally into madness.
You are truly one of the last,
Lonely and wretched.
Your eyes are wild and frightening
At the same time they are blessed
And I wonder if God died,
Turned his back or only just rested.
And you walked out on the seventh day
Through the big gates and on your way
To become one of the last,
Lonely and wretched.
For once you were a child.
Your cheeks were red,
You were well fed.
You laughed and played
Till you got teary,
Ran to your mother
When you were weary.
But somewhere you were forsaken
Alone I'll not bear the blame
And somehow all was taken,
Your mind, your body, your name.
Forgive us our unkindness,
Our desertion and our blindness,
With you, all the last,
Lonely and wretched.
Forgive us, all the last,
Lonely and wretched.
The lyrics of Joan Baez’s song Last Lonely And Wretched describe the experience of a person who is exhausted and impoverished, searching for a home and a sense of belonging, but finding only loneliness and despair in a land that is devoid of compassion. From the day of their birth, they have wandered aimlessly, lost and disconnected from the community around them. They have become one of the last, truly isolated and emotionally destitute individuals. Years of toil and deprivation have stripped them of their dignity and their sanity, and their eyes betray both a sense of madness and a potential for grace, as though they have been touched by something divine despite their hardships. The song draws attention to the fact that both God and humans have failed the singer, leaving them to suffer alone in a world that is hostile to their needs.
The lyrics of Last Lonely And Wretched are a poignant reminder of the ways in which society can fail its most vulnerable members. It asks us to consider the experiences of those who are marginalized and forgotten, and to recognize the full humanity of each individual, regardless of their circumstances. Through its haunting melody and its evocative lyrics, the song speaks to the universal experience of loneliness and despair, and calls on us to extend compassion and understanding to those who are suffering.

You've become one of the last,
You've become one of the few remaining individuals,
Lonely and wretched.
Left alone and miserable.

But simultaneously they hold a certain kind of holiness,
And I wonder if God died,
And it makes me question whether God is dead,
Turned his back or only just rested.
Perhaps he's turned his back on us, or maybe he's just taking a break.
And you walked out on the seventh day
And you left on the seventh day,
Through the big gates and on your way
Going through the vast gates and on your journey
To become one of the last,
In order to be one of the final few,
Lonely and wretched.
Alone and in misery.
For once you were a child.
At one point in your life, you were a child.
Your cheeks were red,
Your cheeks were rosy,
You were well fed.
You were well nourished.
You laughed and played

Till you got teary,
Until you cried,
Ran to your mother
And ran to your mother for comfort
When you were weary.
When you were tired.
But somewhere you were forsaken
However, at some point you were abandoned,
Alone I'll not bear the blame
It's not my fault you're alone,
And somehow all was taken,
But unfortunately, everything was taken away from you,
Your mind, your body, your name.
Your sanity, your physical being, and your identity.
Forgive us our unkindness,
Please forgive our cruel actions,
Our desertion and our blindness,
Our abandonment and lack of insight,
With you, all the last,
It applies to all that remain,
Lonely and wretched.
Struggling and desolate, abandoned by those around us.
Forgive us, all the last,
Forgive everyone that remains,
Lonely and wretched.
For feeling alone, isolated, and struggling through life.
