In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.

Love Song To A Stranger
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
His warm arms all around me?
How long since I've gazed into dark eyes that melted my soul down
To a place where it longs to be?
All of your history has little to do with your face
You're mainly a mystery with violins filling in space
You stood in the nude by the mirror and picked out a rose
And lay down beside me again and I watched the rose
On the pillow where it fell
I sank and I slept in a twilight with only one care
To know that when day broke and I woke that you'd still be there
The hours for once they passed slowly, unendingly by
Like a sweet breeze on a field
Your gentleness came down upon me and I guess I thanked you
When you caused me to yield
We spoke not a sentence and took not a footstep beyond
Our two days together which seemingly soon would be gone
Don't tell me of love everlasting and other sad dreams
I don't want to hear
Just tell me of passionate strangers who rescue each other
From a lifetime of cares
Because if love means forever, expecting nothing returned
Then I hope I'll be given another whole lifetime to learn
Because you gave to me oh so many things it makes me wonder
How they could belong to me
And I gave you only my dark eyes that melted your soul down
To a place where it longs to be
In Joan Baez's song Love Song To A Stranger, the singer reflects on a night spent with a stranger in a twin bed. She marvels at the intimacy they shared despite knowing almost nothing about each other's life stories. Instead, the "mystery" between them is filled by the "violins" of their emotions. She describes how she watched the stranger pick a rose, lay down next to her, and fall asleep, and how that moment felt like a blissful "twilight" in which time stood still. She acknowledges that their time together was brief but intense and asks him to tell her of other "passionate strangers" who rescue each other from the cares of life.
The song is a reflection on the fleeting nature of human connections and the power of shared experience to transcend personal histories. It captures a sense of awe and wonder at the unexpected bonds that can form between people, no matter how different they may seem on the surface. The singer's plea to be told of other passionate strangers suggests a desire for the mystery and magic of this encounter to be repeated, even if only in memory.

How long since I've spent a whole night in a twin bed with a stranger
It's been a while since I've shared a bed with someone whom I barely know
His warm arms all around me?
His embrace making me feel warm and cozy
How long since I've gazed into dark eyes that melted my soul down
To a place where it longs to be?
It's been a while since I've met someone with such captivating eyes that I felt drawn into their soul
All of your history has little to do with your face
You're mainly a mystery with violins filling in space
Your past has nothing to do with your appearance, and I find you to be an enigmatic and mysterious person with a violin serenading the room
You stood in the nude by the mirror and picked out a rose
From the bouquet in our hotel
And lay down beside me again and I watched the rose
On the pillow where it fell
I sank and I slept in a twilight with only one care
To know that when day broke and I woke that you'd still be there
You picked a rose and lay next to me naked while I watched the rose fall asleep on the pillow, and all I cared about was that you would still be there in the morning
The hours for once they passed slowly, unendingly by
Like a sweet breeze on a field
Your gentleness came down upon me and I guess I thanked you
When you caused me to yield
Time seemed to slow down, and your tenderness made me feel at peace and grateful for the moment of vulnerability and surrender
We spoke not a sentence and took not a footstep beyond
Our two days together which seemingly soon would be gone
We didn't need to say anything or go anywhere beyond our two days together, which appeared to come to an end soon
Don't tell me of love everlasting and other sad dreams
I don't want to hear
Just tell me of passionate strangers who rescue each other
From a lifetime of cares
Because if love means forever, expecting nothing returned
Then I hope I'll be given another whole lifetime to learn
Don't give me false promises of eternal love, as I don't want to hear it. Instead, tell me about the romantic encounters of strangers saving each other from the struggles in life. Because if love means forever but comes with no reciprocation, then I want to live a lifetime of opportunities to understand its true meaning
Because you gave to me oh so many things it makes me wonder
How they could belong to me
And I gave you only my dark eyes that melted your soul down
To a place where it longs to be
You've given me so much, and I can't believe how fortunate I am to receive them. All I could offer was my gaze, which seemed to link our souls together
