In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.

Oh Had I A Golden Thread
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And a needle so fine
I would weave a magic spell
Of rainbow design
Of rainbow design
In it I would weave the courage
Of women giving birth
Of the children of all the earth
Children of all the earth
Won't you show my brothers and sisters
My rainbow design
'Cause I I would bind up this sorry world
With hand and my heart and mind
Oh hand and heart and mind
Oh had I a golden thread
And a needle so fine
I I would weave a magic spell
Of rainbow design
Of rainbow design
Oh oh oh
The lyrics of Joan Baez's song "Oh Had I A Golden Thread" suggest the power of unity and creativity in bringing about positive change in the world. The singer speaks of weaving a "magic spell" of rainbow design, which represents a coming together of diverse individuals in harmony. The idea of a golden thread and needle represents the ability to bring one's imagination and vision to life through actions. The singer speaks of using this thread to weave in the courage of women giving birth and the innocence of children. This suggests a desire to bring about a future that is more nurturing and supportive of vulnerable populations.
The repeated line "Of rainbow design" emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusivity. The rainbow is often seen as a symbol of unity and hope. In this context, it represents a coming together of people from all different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences to create something beautiful and harmonious.
The singer also calls on others to join in the creation of this rainbow design, suggesting that it is a collective effort. They express a desire to "bind up this sorry world" with their hand, heart, and mind. This implies a recognition of the pain and suffering that exists in the world, but also a belief that positive change is possible through individual and collective action.
Overall, "Oh Had I A Golden Thread" is a hopeful and inspiring song that reminds us of the power of imagination, creativity, and unity in bringing about positive change in the world.

Oh had I a golden thread
If only I had a golden thread
And a needle so fine
And a needle that is delicately thin
I would weave a magic spell
I could make an enchanted fabric
Of rainbow design
That is full of colors just like a rainbow
In it I would weave the courage
Within this cloth, I would sew bravery
Of women giving birth
Like the bravery of mothers who give birth
And in it I would weave the innocence
Also, I would add purity
Of the children of all the earth
Just like the innocence of children all over the world
Won't you show my brothers and sisters
Can you present my siblings
My rainbow design
The multicolored cloth I created
'Cause I I would bind up this sorry world
Because through that, I could unite this sad planet
With hand and my heart and mind
By using my hand, heart, and mind
Oh hand and heart and mind
Oh, if only I could use my hand, heart, and mind
