In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Please Come To Boston
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm stayin' here with some friends, and they've got lots of room
You can sell your paintings on the sidewalk
By a cafe where I hope to be workin' soon
Please come to Boston
I said, 'No, would you come home to me?'
And I said, 'Hey, ramblin' boy, now won't cha settle down?
There ain't no gold, and there ain't nobody like me
I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee'
Please come to Denver with the snowfall
We'll move up into the mountains so far that we can't be found
And throw 'I love you' echoes down the canyon
And then lie awake at night till they come back around
Please come to Denver
I said, 'No, boy, would you come home to me?'
And I said, 'Hey ramblin' boy why don't cha settle down?
Denver ain't your kinda town
There ain't no gold and there ain't nobody like me
'Cause I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee'
Now this drifter's world goes 'round and 'round
And I doubt that it's ever gonna stop
But of all the dreams I've lost or found
And all that I ain't got
I still need to cling to
Somebody I can sing to
Please come to LA to live forever
California life alone is just too hard to build
I live in a house that looks out over the ocean
And there's some stars that fell from the sky
Livin' up on the hill
Please come to LA
But I just said, 'No, boy, won't you come home to me?'
And I said, 'Hey, ramblin' boy, why don't cha settle down?
LA can't be your kinda town
There ain't no gold, and there ain't nobody like me
No, no, I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee'
'I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee'
Joan Baez's song Please Come to Boston is about a man who is traveling from city to city, searching for his purpose and finding love along the way. The song's main theme revolves around the singer's attempts to convince the man to settle down with her. The lyrics express the singer's wish for the man to come to Boston in the spring, where she is staying with some friends who have lots of room. The singer suggests that the man sell his paintings on the sidewalk by the café where she hopes to work soon. The imagery used in the song depicts a peaceful and idyllic scene that the singer hopes they can share together.
The second verse of the song describes the singer's desire for the man to come to Denver with her so that they can move up into the mountains and throw "I love you" echoes down the canyon. The imagery used in this verse depicts a romantic and scenic setting that the singer hopes they can share together. However, the man is still resistant to settling down, and the singer continues to plead with him to come to Los Angeles to live forever. She describes her house looking out over the ocean, and the stars that have fallen from the sky, creating a picturesque setting she wants to share with him.
Overall, Please Come to Boston is a plea for love and companionship from someone who is searching for their purpose in life. The song's lyrics are full of vivid imagery that captures the beauty of different cities and the singer's desire to share it with the man she loves.
