In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Restless Farewell
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Be it mine right or wrongfully
I let it slip gladly past the hands of my friends
To tie up the time most forcefully
But the bottles are done, we've killed each one
And the tables are full and overflowed
And the corner sign says, "It's closing time"
Oh, every boy that ever I've touched
I did not do it harmfully
And every boy that ever I've hurt
I did not do it knowingly
But to remain as friends, you need the time
To make amends and stay behind
And since my feet are now fast and point away from the past
I'll bid farewell and be down the line
Oh, every foe that ever I faced
The cause was there before we came
And every cause that ever I fought
I fought it full without regret or shame
But the dark does die as the curtain is drawn
And somebody's eyes must meet the dawn
And if I see the day I'll only have to stay
So I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone
Oh, a false clock tries to tick out my time
To disgrace, distract and bother me
And the dirt of gossip blows into my face
And the dust of rumors covers me
But if the arrow is straight and the point is slick
It can pierce through the dust no matter how thick
So I'll make my stand and remain as I am
And bid farewell and not give a damn
In the song "Restless Farewell", Joan Baez reflects on her life through the lens of farewells. She sings of bidding farewell to money, former lovers, enemies, and even rumors and gossip that have plagued her. Her thoughts on money are particularly pointed, as she laments spending all of it in her life and seemingly regretting the notion of ever having had it to begin with. She describes how she let it slip away and end up in the hands of friends, not caring for it as it passed through her life.
The second verse speaks to Baez's relationships with men. She insists that she never intentionally hurt any of her previous lovers, and that she often tried to remain friends with them after relationships ended. However, she accepts that time is important for healing and growth, and that sometimes it's impossible to stay connected. Thus, she bids farewell to old lovers and moves on with her life.
The third verse is about facing foes and fighting for causes. Baez two-fold recommends fighting for worthy causes without regretting or shaming yourself, and also acknowledges that time marches on, and darkness fades with the dawn. She comes to terms with the fact that if she's around long enough, she'll stay, so she confidently says her goodbyes and moves forward.
The final verse speaks to gossip, rumors, and false perceptions of oneself. Baez is fervent in her resolve to not give in to them and remain true to who she is. She stands firm in her beliefs and is ready to confront and overcome any attempts to besmirch her. As she boldly bids farewell in the night, it's clear she's ready to face whatever comes next.

And the corner sign says, "It's closing time"
The night is coming to an end and it is time for me to leave

I did not do it harmfully
I did not intend to cause harm to any of them

But the dark does die as the curtain is drawn
Even the darkest moments come to an end
And somebody's eyes must meet the dawn
The new day must be faced by someone
And if I see the day I'll only have to stay
If I am alive to see the next day, I will keep going and stay strong
So I'll bid farewell in the night and be gone
I am leaving behind the troubles of the night and moving on to a new day
Oh, a false clock tries to tick out my time
I am facing a sense of urgency and pressure to accomplish things, but time is not on my side
To disgrace, distract and bother me
I feel as though time is working against me, trying to distract and discourage me
And the dirt of gossip blows into my face
I am being confronted with harmful rumors and negativity from others
And the dust of rumors covers me
Falsehoods and harmful words are causing me distress and obscuring my vision
But if the arrow is straight and the point is slick
If my aim is true and my intentions clear
It can pierce through the dust no matter how thick
I can cut through the confusion and negativity, even if it seems impenetrable
So I'll make my stand and remain as I am
I will hold my ground and stay true to myself despite the challenges
And bid farewell and not give a damn
I am saying goodbye to the negativity and will not allow it to affect me anymore
