In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Will the Circle Be Unbroken
Joan Baez Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
On a cold and cloudy day
When I saw the hearse come rolling
To carry my mother away
Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord bye and bye
There's a better home a waiting
Lord I told that undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For that body you're a haulin'
Lord I hate to see her go
Well I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in that grave.
I went back home Lord that home was lonesome
Since my mother, she was gone
All my brothers and sisters crying
What a home so sad and alone.
One by one the seats were emptied
One by one they went away
Now that family they are parted
Will they meet again some day.
I was singing with my sisters
I was singing with my friends
And we all can, sing together
'cause the circle never ends
In Joan Baez's Will the Circle Be Unbroken, she sings about the passing of her mother and the universal human experience of grief and loss. The opening lines describe the moment where Baez sees the hearse arriving to take away her mother's body. She expresses the fear of disruption and separation as she wonders if the circle of life will remain unbroken with her mother's departure. She asks the question if the family will meet again in the sky and if there is another home waiting beyond this life.
The next verses reveal the depth of Joan Baez's sadness as she envisions being left alone in a lonesome home, singing with loved ones, and having to let them go one by one as they pass. Despite the heartache, Baez finds comfort in the fact that the circle of life and love never ends, and the bonds we have with the ones we love will always connect us even when they’re gone.
The song deals with themes of love, loss, and death in a timeless way that can be universally understood. It has become a staple in funeral services and commemorations of loved ones, and many artists have covered it, including The Carter Family, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson.
