Weber married to a young bandleader. She was pregnant in 1954 when she was introduced to Eddie Joy, a manager, who in turn introduced her to Charles Randolph Grean, an A&R worker for RCA and Dot Records in New York.

Grean gave a demo of Weber's singing a song called "Marionette" to Mitch Miller, the head of A&R at Columbia Records. Miller took a song entitled "Let Me Go, Devil" and had it rewritten as "Let Me Go, Lover!" for Weber, who recorded it on the Columbia label. The song was performed on the television show, Studio One and caught the public's fancy, reaching #1 in the United States and #16 in the United Kingdom in 1955.

At the time of the song's biggest success, however, she gave birth to a baby daughter and was unable to promote her career. In 1957 another single "Gone" was released. Consequently the song was the only recording of hers to chart, and she was dropped from Columbia's roster.

Weber died of heart failure at a mental institution in Ancora, New Jersey, aged 45.

It was 1954 I was fifteen years old ,and seated beside me in my English class was a this very attractive young lady I was smitten from the first time I saw her I fell madly in love with her as only young fifteen year old boys can. We were casual classmates for that period ,but as soon as the bell rang to change class she would disappear .I never got up the nerve to ask her for a date,but she was on my mind day and night,one of my friends would tease me when this song came on the radio. One day four years latter I was at a pool with a bunch of guys when who walks out of the ladies locker room with a friend looking more beautiful as a grown woman .I couldn’t believe my eyes I got up to go over and chat with her ,when out of the men’s locker room come two young men that the ladies obviously were with ,the walked away holding hands. There is an episode of I Love Lucy in which Lucille Ball sings a few off key bars of this hit song. During the 1955 season, but I don't recall the story line. It was funny when she sang it.

This was in an episode from Season 4, "Bull Fight Dance." Lucy wants to appear in one of Ricky's shows (naturally) and tries singing, unsuccessfully (naturally), and ends up having to put on a bull costume. But she makes the most of it!

Joan Weber unfortunately had a tragic life, seemingly to have fallen off the grid by 1969 when she was sent a sizable royalty check for this song. By 1981, she was dead at age 45 apparently committed to a mental hospital. She was pregnant when she recorded this great song. Not sure what ever became of that child.

I think that Joan's voice was very nice, but it was quite common for established stars to do cover records. Patti Page recorded "Let Me Go Lover," as well.
