After recording and self-releasing two EPs in 2002, Newsom was signed to the independent label Drag City. Her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, was released in 2004 to critical acclaim and garnered Newsom an underground following. She would receive wider exposure with the release of Ys (2006), which charted at number 134 on the Billboard 200.
She released two further albums: Have One on Me (2010) and Divers (2015), the latter of which outsold all of her previous albums. Newsom has been noted by critics for her unique musical style, sometimes characterized as psychedelic folk, and for her prominent use of harp instrumentation. She has also appeared as an actress with roles in the television series Portlandia and in the 2014 film Inherent Vice.

I'm a sensitive bore
You seem markedly more
And I'm oozing surprise
But it's late in the day
And you're well on your way
What was golden went gray
And the gatherin' floozies
Afford to be choosy
And all sneezing darkly
In the dimming divide
And I have read the right books
To interpret your looks
You were knocking me down
With the palm of your eye
Though
Na na na na na'na na na
A'na na na na na na na na na na na na na
This is unlike the story
It was written to be
I was riding its back
When it used to ride me
And we were galloping manic
To the mouth of the source
We were swallowing panic
In the face of its force
And I was blue
I am blue and unwell
Made me bolt like a horse
Ah na na na na a na na na na'na na na
A'na na na na na na na now now now now now now
Now it's done
Watch it go
You've changed some
Water runs from the snow print
Am I so dear?
Do I run rare?
And you've changed some
Peach, plum, pear
Peach, plum
The lyrics to Joanna Newsom's "Peach Plum Pear" are a reflection on a relationship that has changed over time. The singer of the song is sensitive and surprised by the change in their partner. They feel suddenly shy and unsure of themselves in the face of the new dynamic. Meanwhile, the gatherin' floozies - a group of people who are selective about who they associate with - are sneezing darkly in the dimming divide. The singer has read the right books to interpret the looks of their partner, but is finding it difficult to connect with them.
The second verse of the song is a reflection on how the relationship used to be. The singer and their partner were galloping to the mouth of the source, swallowing panic in the face of its force. But now, the singer is blue and unwell, and the relationship has changed. The water runs from the snow print, highlighting the ephemeral and fleeting nature of things. The final lyrics question the singer's self-worth and whether they are still valued in the relationship.
Overall, "Peach Plum Pear" is a melancholic exploration of how relationships can change over time and how people can grow apart.

+Cultof Ian - Well if you listen to a lot of Joanna Newsom's music, she's has a real poet's soul, so the idea of literature is woven into this.

To me this is a poetic but fairly literal description of a meeting in a store. If I had to hazard a guess, it would be a book store. Perhaps it was a writer she greatly admired, or someone she used to know. Upon meeting him she is conscious of being a "sensitive bore" - that stiff formality of meeting someone in a public setting; and is shocked to discover he is actually much more than that - perhaps someone she could genuinely connect with, and open up to. And the moment lights up into something golden, like the late afternoon sun, but it's "late in the day", and perhaps he has other pressing matters, so the golden moment quickly turns grey..There seem to be others waiting there turn to speak with him "the gathering floozies."...who are growing impatient "sneezing darkly"..
More literary references.."read the right book to interpret your look..knocking me down with the palm of your eye.."...so she can read that he is pushing her away, possibly due to the circumstance, but she cannot know the reason, but simply feels it.
This was unlike the story
It was written to be
I was riding it's back
When it used to ride me
And we were galloping manic
To the mouth of the source
We were swallowing panic
In the face of it's force
She has constructed an idea in her head of how this meeting or moment would go..."unlike the story It was written to be" ..."riding its back when it used to ride me.." - suggests that it's that timeless dream of perfection, connection, of the perfect moment that exists throughout our lives..from childhood to adulthood and death...so she contrasts the stiff formality of the opening with this beautiful, raw, rugged language of emotion - of all the things she cannot express...the backstory she is unable to convey to him in this brief exchange...
And I am blue
I am blue and unwell
Made me bolt like a horse
Now it's done
Watch it go
You've changed some
Water runs from the snow
Am I so dear
Do I run rare
You've changed some
Peach, plum, pear
Peach, plum
and then her reaction...sadness...wanting to escape..run away..then the acceptance..."now it's done, watch it go..water runs from the snow.."..people change, things change..the childlike yearning for perfection and connection contrasts with the adult reality...we can be cold..we can be indifferent.
Her lyrics always amaze me.
@Anhedonia23
Everyone I've showed this song is like "how can you listen to this??" Her voice is part of the charm, like a testament to the reckless and untamed singing of a child.

RL people are always so dumb sometimes... sometimes the only people you can vibe with is who you find in the magic of the internet.
@ZAmpedNZ
I get that same reaction.... I just clap back with "Don't talk to me about voices, person who listens to generic Insert Genre voice"

I think everyone's ears may be broken. Or maybe only a few can hear Angels?
@jimbeam6491
Oh come on you MUST admit it registers in a certain amplitude of sound some might call “shrill.” That doesn’t mean it didn’t captivate my soul unceasingly since I first heard it, but you gotta give it to our fellow humans who find JN unlistenable. Bless us all.
@drpolarbeer
I don't know why, but the video paired with this song makes it feel like a deep dive into the mind of a dying elderly person looking back on their life.

Often when people write about Joanna Newsom you read things like "She's matured so much", but when you have a good, honest listen of The Milk-Eyed Mender, you can tell that those mature themes and that adult, mature writer's voice - and that darkness - have been present in her songs from the very first album.

It fills me with remorseful nostalgia for a life that I haven't lived
