Her father is a Presbyterian minister, her mother a nurse; her family also includes three sisters and two brothers. With medicine strong in the family, it was natural for Hogg to become a doctor. Thus, she studied medicine at Queens University in Belfast. In her third year, Joanne was singing at the Christian Artists talent event and was convinced sing in a school ministry at Youth For Christ in Denmark. After a year, Joanne returned to the University to complete her two remaining years of schooling.

She started working as a junior doctor in the Belfast Hospital, but in 1988 she was invited to form a band with Dave Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge. In 1989, Joanne stopped practicing medicine and Iona was born. Since then, Joanna has sung all over Europe and America. Iona's recordings have become successful worldwide, making them Europe's best selling contemporary Christian band.

Hogg recorded her first solo album, Looking Into Light, in 1999. Her vocals were featured in the role-playing games Xenogears (for the Sony PlayStation) and Xenosaga (for the Sony PlayStation 2). She sang the English versions of Star of Tears and Small Two of Pieces from Xenogears, and Pain and Kokoro from Xenosaga. Star of Tears was featured on the 2-disc Xenogears: Original Soundtrack; however, the song is not normally accessible in the game. Hogg collaborated with several artists for the album New Irish Hymns and provided the female vocals on both solo releases from Troy Donockley.

I knew the flute motif is the same as in the Future Redeemed ending song with the same singer. Takahashi is a one of a kind genius. This man took 30 years and multiple project failures to complete his vision in Perfect Works and did it in a way no one would have ever anticipated. Bravo. I think it's difficult to fully describe what it's been like to be on this crazy ride, but I would do it all over again. This is the most ambitious storytelling in games period and it's not even close.

Oh my... First time i finished this game, in 1999, Jesus... I cried without no reason and for no reason i started to think about my father that passed away in 1991. I remember my mom coming and asking "hey, what's going on? why are you crying?" i was just just missing him so much You know... It's something that i was kinda like already forgotten, but this song, oh my, was powerful. Things that Videogames do to us huh? Never told my Mom why i was really crying (in reality), but i'm glad this game had the power to make me release these "missing feelings" that i was pushing away and denying (Here in Brazil We call this sentiment "Saudade"). Xenogears it's on top of the games i most like in life.

Yeah I would say best story in a JRPG for sure.hooks bits of inspiration from philosophy, anime like neon Genesis evangelion, science fiction like Soylent Green, and mashed them altogether into something amazing. I do think it was massively flawed as it basically ran out of its budget and just told the story in text on disc 2 and dropped you off in endgame, but it has so much going for it that it’s possibly my favorite JRPG along with Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger, and maybe FF6. The Soundtrack was incredible but I think he outdid himself with the Chrono across soundtrack, even though the game was disappointing. The main characters like Fei, Citan, and Citan were well developed and got plenty of interaction, but all the rest just have like one moment to shine. The villains though were very well done, especially the final one. A remake would be awesome but I think we’re past that.

I played this as a teenager shortly after it came out. It had received lackluster reviews, but it was a Squaresoft game so I was curious. I was hooked quickly and recognized this would become a classic for many who love rpgs. Still an amazing story.

+UberWraith It's assumption on your part how much better the game would have been. The bottom line is that the chair narration sucked ass and was my biggest issue with the game period. Sorry, but you can't rate potential. It's always been clear to me that FF6 had some stuff cut(which was confirmed at some point), and while in a similar fashion, that game's second half had issues, it didn't suck as much as xenogears's second half.

Like I said, I really love xenogear's first half. But the second half sucked, and trying to second guess what happened with FFVIII at the time really doesn't help any.

+nejiblue I really like Fei narrating the events of what is happening. I thought that was a really nice touch, being told the story and taking control at key points. I know some would have wanted gameplay approach. I believe Xenogears 2nd half works best in the format we got it in. Yes it was rushed, but to me, it fit perfectly.

This is so nostalgic it’s painful. This is the last time I was content at all though I was depressed during this period. I’ve been on a path of depression, anxiety, drug addiction, and I just miss playing these games with their beautiful music. I remember I thought when I grew up I’d be an amazing hero like Fei. Great lyrics, outstanding music (the low whistle gives me shivers every time I listen to it) Yasunori Mitsuda truly is a genius, and Joanne Hogg makes it even better in her performance. I'm surprised Namco-Bandai has never brought back Mitsuda in the succeeding titles of Xenosaga though. The newer generation of players will never realize what they're missing in these old games, where quality and passion are unadulterated.

I remember beating this game.... This song plays... Fei flying down from Heaven.... And just being stunned at how amazing and beautiful this song was during the credits. Joanne did an amazing job with the vocals. There's just certain songs that catch the mood. This was a 10/10. Feel the same way with the ending to the movie Oblivion.

I was 14 when this game came out and it blew me away. Every time I hear that flute solo near the end of the song I get teary from all the nostalgia.

Spoilers for the entire Xeno Series

I love how the final boss of Xenogears representing Miang's world of death is called Ouroborus, and the ending song representing Fei and Elly's love, while called Small Two of Pieces in English, is called Moebius in Japanese. I love how Xenoblade 3 shows that Fei and Elly's desire to be together forever is ultimately empty, and that instead they should enjoy the time they have. I love that it paints the cycle of death that Miang thrived from as at least being better than an eternity trapped in a single moment. I love how Xenoblade 3 shows that Fei's desire to be with Elly forever would have driven him to a point where he essentially becomes Grahf. I love that N doesn't represent Id or the Coward, but simply Fei himself, and his inability to cope with the loss of a loved one. I love that Noah represents his hope that the future will be bright, and his determination to change it if it isn't. I love that N and Noah represent the two aspects of Fei that allowed him to overcome every challenge he faced in Xenogears. I love that Noah still shares that sadness and pain from loss, but is able to accept it. I love that in the ending, Noah and Mio are running to the end of the world, like in Moebius/Small Two of Pieces. I love that all of this was set up in Fei's previous incarnations, such as Kim, who did something similar himself when he lost a loved one. I love that this is absolutely what happens with Fei in Perfect Works Chapter 6. I love that all of this has been eluded to with previous Xeno villains. Wilhelm's Eternal Recurrence. Zanza's cycle of death and rebirth. Jin's moment of eternity. And now, N and Z's Endless Now. Perfect Works Chapter 6 has been the biggest Xeno Series mystery for so long, but Takahashi has been telling us what it was this entire time. We just didn't realize it until he told us that with Xenoblade 3 that Fei had a part in causing it. I love the Xeno Series. And as sad as I am to see the end of Perfect Works, I'm excited to see where Takahashi will take the series in the future. This is the best story ever told, and I cannot thank Takahashi enough for creating all of these wonderful experiences.

The best song with vocal in video game. This song stands taller than Baba Yetu in my opinion, and that song won a grammy (well, the album won). And it's also the video game version of "My Heart Will Go On". It was released close to each other (Titanic and Xenogears) and some thought that this song was inspired by Titanic, which is silly as this game was out before Titanic hit theatres!
The lyrics, the tunes, the instruments, Joanne Hogg, it's a masterpiece. Shame that Mitsuda cannot recreate the masterpiece in Xenosaga or Monado, but a masterpiece is not supposed to be recreated anyway.
