Those who are wondering who plays the incredible organ in the background, it's Walter Wanderley. His 1966 recording on Verve Records "A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness" with Astrud is ESSENTIAL listening for any bossa or jazz fan !

So often those who put up the dislikes don't know much about music and without any real background are unable to judge from any knowledge. They only know one or two things (said the music teacher, me). Or they don't think they like organ music, or singers with an accent or whatever issue they seem to have. Astrud was very young, had no training and was suddenlyput on the spot to sing these songs in a foreign language. As it turned out she had a unique voice and people loved the innocence in her voice, as well as her smooth tone and spot on rhythmic sense. You should hear her scat in her later years when she toured with her son! I have a number of her albums that she released over the years. She is a very good singer. She has a rhythm, and a smoothness no one else has.

Astrud Gilberto‘s original version still can't be topped ! The chord changes will trip up any singer. What makes this song so difficult to sing is the long verses without a break. Breath control is absolutely essential !

Even a singer such as Diana Krall struggles with this song as she comes up for air. That's why the vocal version has not been tackled by singers, only a handful since Astrud‘s original 1966 version, still THE definitive version. Her vocal breath control is amazing !

Hers was a truly lovely voice. She expanded the audience for samba and her later contributions to jazz vocals by women are underappreciated. All that said, this performance showed a weakness she had for missing pitch a bit when descending.
